Solution for "Campers" in Tactical Shooters
posted February 20, 2007 - 2:11pmWhen it comes to shooters, particularly with slower-paced tactical shooters like Rainbow Six Vegas or Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter,"camping" is a topic that players continue to debate about. It is frowned upon by a lot of players as it can turn matches into stinkfests, while many gamers support camping especially when you have organized teams that utilize snipers who are supposed to camp. But there are those annoying players who choose to hide and wait for the enemy to cross his line of fire, no matter how long it might take. Naturally, the player or players who decide to get on the move to hunt down the camper will be at a disadvantage, especially when the match has come down to the last player on each opposing team.
THE SOLUTION
The best possible way to deal with campers is to have a radar system in the game that will give away the positions of players who stay in one place. The way the radar works is that if a player stays in the same radius (radius size to be set by host) for a set amount of time (also to be set by host)then he will appear on the radar for a set amount of time (set by host). The radius is established the moment the player stops moving OR changes directions (for those players who think they can outsmart the system by pacing back and forth in the same place).
Some might be opposed to this as it requires players to constantly be on the move. In reality all it does is prevent players from exploiting the game. Anyone who plays tactical shooters the way they were ought to be played (utilizing squad tactics, moving around the map in a calculated manner) will hardly notice the radar system at all. Only the campers will be suffering from this. But what about the snipers? This is a valid concern as camping and sniping go hand in hand. At this point the only solution I can think of is to incorporate a class system where a player under the "sniper" category will either have a smaller radius with longer camp times before showing up on the radar, or be exempt from the radar system altogether but will be limited to the use of sniper rifles (in case players try to again outsmart the system and get classified as a sniper but intend to use an assault rifle).
