Somali Pirates Hijack MV Irene E.M. Before Dawn 4-14-09
posted April 14, 2009 - 3:29amOnce again pirates have hijacked a cargo ship off the coast of Somalia. Just before dawn this morning pirates took the MV Irene E.M.
Yesterday, U.S. Navy SEALS snipers freed an American ships Captain being held hostage by Somali pirates. Days before the French Navy freed two families being held aboard their yacht by Somali pirates. At least 11 other ships and more than 250 crewmen are currently being held for ransom by Somali pirates.
And now today, the MV Irene and her crew have been taken. No details are currently available about this hijacking.
How long is the world going to allow these pirates to terrorize the seas?
There is no government or civil law in Somalia. The people have no means of supporting themselves. The most successful industry they have found is piracy. It is estimated that they have collected more than a hundred million dollars in ransom during the last six months.
The shipping routes that pass the coast of Somalia are vital to the world economy. How long are we going to allow these pirates to cruise the seas and hijack ships at will?
This is a problem the world needs to attend to now, before any more unarmed cargo vessels are taken by pirates.
That seems to be obvious.
