Sometimes All You Can Do Is Laugh

Sometimes All You Can Do Is Laugh

People have different opinions about life. Life is what you make it. Life is hard. Life is too short. Life is like a box of chocolates. Life sucks and then you die. I'm probably more of the "life is what you make it" crowd.

For those of us who are old enough to be able to look back on our youth with some perspective and see the transition toward adulthood, we will not see a straight and level path from there to here. No, we will see mountains and valleys, some taller and some deeper than others, but they all lead to where we find ourselves today.

Sometimes we may find ourselves wondering how in the heck we survived at all, when we remember how awful it was during those dark days, weeks, months, and even years. How indeed.

I have had my share of darkness, which started with an early divorce by my parents to a childhood filled with physical, emotional, and mental abuse at the hands of an alcoholic stepdad and indifferent mother and ten years of military service most of which contained the darkest periods of my life when I felt trapped and alone.

Do you know what got me through it all? My sense of humor. While most of the time I do try and find the silly silver lining to the cloud, there are times when I delved deeply into gallows humor as the dark depths of my soul were plumbed. It wasn't easy, but I laughed.

There are many people in the world today suffering due to the bad economy or who have bad jobs or who are in bad relationships. No matter how dark the situation, you need to find a way to laugh because that's sometimes all you can do.

Agreed, + 1, how did I miss this + devil's advocacy

Wilma Proops is often found laughing at past events - even those which were the most painful when they happened. She's an enigma. Unfortunately she's sometimes unable to take this course at the time. This is when she goes into her office, taking with her only a jar of peanut butter, houmous and crudities (that's how she terms carrot, celery and cucumber slices) and a magnum of Mum and doesn't come out until she's written a full comedy monologue or to go to the toilet. [excuse me, she's dictating this = she's gone now...]. I think Wilma's point was that you do far more than laugh in the face of adversity jdubhub. You share your thoughts with honesty, express the anguish and horrors you've been through but remain fair, protective and outspoken against anything you know to be wrong.

Great Article jdubhub

Great article jdubhub, I know what you mean about laughter, an documentary on Mark Twain said he probably laughed so much, to keep himself from going crazy. I found this to be so true, especially for deep thinkers who write; which may exclude me. Hehehehe. You know the old saying, laughter is a good medicine. Great job +1

Joining you in that line...

I do agree with your insights here. Though discussing issues that need further clarification and resolution is a healthy activity but sometimes, when we found out that it already caused us to be stressed and tensed, that makes it unprofitable. Coming up with uplifting articles has a lot to offer for both the readers and other writers as well. It has been proven that a writer's pen plays an important role in the lives of the readers. It may make or destroy a reader's day after the reading.

Good advice, Cresilda

There are some things that shouldn't be approached when we are too upset or angry. We need to back off for a while and gain some perspective. Laughing is a good way to achieve that perspective quicker. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

Smiling influences our systems...

My husband has a very positive attitude in facing various concerns and issues and in our entire married life for 23 years he's been on smiles inspite of the ups and downs. Sometimes when I'm so depressed and disgusted on the turn out of events, he would come smiling and start pouring out his stored humor stories and eventually we ended up laughing together. After the motivation that he made, we would start talking about the possible solution with a positive spirit. He always tells me that nothing can be solved with a frowning face.

Laugh and..

"Laugh and the world laughs with You", "Weep and you Weep alone" Can't remember who this was by but it's true enough!

It's only quitting if you don't get back up one more time

I might feel as though I've been knocked down a few times in my lifetime, yet I continued to get back up. I know there are others out there who have it worse than me that are maybe wondering whether anyone cares if they get back up. *raises hand* I for one care if they get back up and I know there are others who do, too. For all the stuff I've gone through in my life, I wouldn't change a thing. The reason why is that I am truly happy with who and where I am right now. If I changed one thing from the past, I would be in a different place and maybe not so happy. It took me a while and lots of work to be able to put a healthy perspective on my life, but I'm here and ready to keep living no matter what. Thanks for your comment. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

That's why I've changed my approach to my writing here

Probably before you joined, Monteath, I was heavily involved with debating politics and arguing with people who chauvinistically held contrary political beliefs or biases that I found distasteful. While at the time I felt like I was enjoying it, it cast a shadow over my soul and it was affecting me at home in the real world, too. Sometime last November, I had an epiphany that I was doing myself and my readership a disservice by writing things that were not true to my heart and what I wanted for the world. So, I took a step back, reassessed, and started writing uplifting, positive articles that were true to who I am. Those have actually been my best-received articles to date. The math for me is pretty simple. People have enough negativity in their lives without having to go online to a writing community where they want to help better their situation, only to have someone tell them they are stupid or they hold idiotic beliefs or whatever. I see my role as sort of a cheerleader and my goal is to reach my readership with a positive message that hopefully sparks a little flame of hope in their heart. That's my mission, anyway. Putting our best foot forward

After I left the Navy in 1996, I was living in downtown San Diego and looking for a part-time job that was interesting. One of the jobs that I found was a place called "House of Wraps", which sold healthy sandwiches as wraps, back when having a "wrap" was the hottest thing going. I was going to be their delivery person on one of those delivery tricycles with the hotbox in back. Anyway, when I was interviewing for the job, the manager asked me what I considered to be my best attribute. I simply replied, "My sense of humor." That made him smile because he had grown accustomed to hearing the stock "hard working", "punctual", etc. My open honesty is what got me the job. Having a sense of humor is probably the best gift any of us can be given at birth. I honestly don't know what I would have done without it. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

Thank you, Cresilda

One additional benefit to laughter, especially belly laughing, is that it causes your brain to emit endorphins. Endorphins are mood elevators par excellence and a much more satisfying release of tension than drugs or alcohol, which both have their own problems. Thank you for your comment!
