Songs Work This Way; Don't Ask Me Why ...

Songs Work This Way; Don't Ask Me Why ...

I wrote to one of my favorite MySpace-bands that they should remember a rule about words in their songs—they don't matter as much as the way they make you feel like sing them and the way they make the instrumentalists feel like backing them.

Sometimes on MySpace, I'll hear groups singing songs as if the words matter ... as if the music behind their words is just "background noise".

What nerds! I mean, it's okay as long as they're just doing it for fun–as long as they don't expect much more profit than that–but I don't want them crowding-out the real artists!

The nerdiness is also okay if they're trying to be funny, like Weird Al or Cledus T., but–fer γ∀ωδ-sakes–leave anarchy and conniving out!

Not Quite What I Meant

I didn't quite mean "not the words at all," but more like 'not the words in-lieu-of "the music" (which is both the way you say the words and everything other than the words).' It's sort of like taking the Fortress of Solitude out of the Holy Trinity, and leaving only Jorel and Khalel. If he didn't have the Fortress, Khalel could've just 'hummed the tune' and it would have nearly the same effect. - Call me J, MythMan J

Words aren't important?

I'm going to disagree with you on this one. I hate the current genre of rap. It's just crap being spewed out of those peoples' mouths. Sure the beat is decent, but those words make it unbearable. Some bands sing about the same thing over and over, their words holding no substance, yet some bands have a deeper meaning, enigmatic phrases, and still back it up with great instrumentals. Words are important as is the music behind them but to say it's not the words at all seems a bit foolhardy to me. ~Corbs
