Sony Recalls Battery Packs Once Again

More than two years after the largest battery recall issue in history, Sony is recalling some of their batteries once again.

The batteries manufactured by Sony are involved in more than 40 worldwide overheating incidents of laptops. That is the reason why Sony and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) announced thursday they'll recall 100.000 laptop batteries. 65.000 of them were sold internationally. The batteries involved are 2.15Ah lithium-ion batteries.

The manufacturers affected; HP with 32.000 laptops, Toshiba with 3.000 laptops that are using this battery pack, and Dell with only 150 laptops. Vaio-laptops manufactured by Sony aren't affected because there's another type of battery in those laptops.

Sony says that the first known issues with those 2.15Ah lithium-ion batteries emerged in June, 2005. Since that incident, more than 40 other incidents with those same batteries were reported. A few of these overheating incidents resulted in smoke or fire, sometimes even causing small injuries. Half of these incidents led to small damages to objects nearby the laptops, Sony and CPSC says.

Sony says only 2.15Ah lithium-ion batteries produced between October, 2004 and June, 2005 are affected. "Machine-configurations on one section got changed more frequently than usual, from October 2004, till June, 2005, and we believe this diminished the quality of the batteries, whereby it's possible they can overheat." said a spokesman of Sony.

According to Sony, no issues were reported of batteries produced after 2006. HP, Toshiba and Dell all created an own website where customers can fill in a form. After filling in the form, they'll send a new battery pack for free. The affected laptop models are also announced on those websites.
