Sorry if I'm not "black enough" for you.

Sorry if I'm not "black enough" for you.

So this idiot writes me on myspace. "What's up with that wack a** music on your page? You don't like rap? Holla back at me, Dominican Playa"
...
I write him back, nicely that it's called "Rock music" and proceed to tell him about the band etc and the fact is, I don't care for rap music...He writes back "Wow, I guess we lost another one."

Stuff like that pisses me the hell off. I'm tired of explaining myself to people. I'm sick of the looks I get from some of the other black people when they hear me speak proper english (OH NOES!!one) or find out my preferred choice of music isn't rap. I'm tired of some of the white people who feel the need to "speak slang" to me when THEY don't speak like that in the first place, because it's common knowledge that ALL black people speak slang and "teh ebonics" is the only way to communicate with us!!!one. And then when I open my mouth and they hear me, it's like "ZOMG, yer so special and not like the otherssszzz" Yeah, super negro right here. *EYEROLL* Please don't do that. Don't speak slang when a moment ago, you spoke to the other white person normally because that's how you usually speak. You WILL be laughed at when you leave.

I'm tired of some of the stupid black guys who try talk to me and when I turn them down, suddenly I'm a "b**** who thinks she's all that." No, it's because I'd rather have someone approach me with respect and say "Can I have a moment of your time?" instead of "DANG, youz a FYNE shorty, look at dat a**, lemme holla at chu for a minute" all the while blinding me with the bling in their mouth. I'm tired of the stupid white guys who only want to talk to me because they have some kind of freaking fetish and they find me exotic or a form of their own personal rebellion because they're breaking out of the "norm" and it's the cool, liberal thing to do now-a-days! Or even worse, the kind that would want to sleep with me in a heartbeat, but the moment I'd ask them to take me home to meet their Mum and dad! Not up for it? How about introduce me to the circle of your friends? No? Hold my hand as we walk down the street? Negative? KEEP IT MOVING.

Did you note the word "some?" Because guess what? NO one race is "always like that" Guess what? There are black guys who DON'T speak slang, don't "rock the gold teeth," DON'T listen to disgusting misogynistic rap music, who DON'T walk around with their pants five sizes two big hanging off their behinds. There ARE white people who do speak slang, not to be "posers," but because of the area where they were raised (product of your environment anyone??!), there ARE white guys who really are nice and interested in you because they find something in YOU as a person and genuinely want to be with you no matter what anyone else may say.

And I don't care what anyone says, we'll NEVER be "color blind" to race, just STOP that. We're a percentage away from being 100 percent genetically the same when it comes to the human race, but you know what? We're supposed to embrace our differences and understand and respect our various cultures and mixtures instead of acting as if they don't exist. And pretending that there is no problem in this day and age and acting as if everything is so awesome is a BIG part of the problem.

I wrote him back:
I wasn't anyone's to begin with. You can't lose what you never had. ;) And considering I'm not American, that type of music isn't part of my culture ANYWAY so I'm not obligated to listen to anything. And even if I was American, my thoughts would still be the same. Think about it. Every country in this world from Africa to Japan HAS black people in it. Do you honestly think that every single one is automatically going to listen to rap music? Please. We aren't born with a "handbook for negros."
You're smarter than that. Think outside the box and stop falling into the stereotype of your own race.
-Me

Why am I ranting? Well. Trust me, it goes beyond a stupid myspace note. It's a LOT deeper than that and I needed to get it off my chest.

am not black enough....

You are right. The Japanese are a very polite people. But as you get to know them and they accept you amongst them, you can discern an unspoken perplexity - "How can he be civilised and not be Japanese?" !! Of course I am stretching it a bit but still that feeling is there. The red neck from the backwoods is easier to handle -just quote Shakespear in a sonorous voice. The bewilderment is quite a spectacle to see. Ivar Tabrizi

Haha. A friend of mine said

Haha. A friend of mine said "If we all were mixed up, the world would be a better place!" I honestly couldn't agree, after witnessing two biracial girls argue about which mixture was better than the other! *sigh* I've been wrapped up a lot in Japanese culture and Indian culture is part of my own lineage, so I know about the class distinctions. Horrid, isn't it? It's what I call a sad flaw of human nature and while I doubt it's going to change anytime EVER, it's great to be the one to step outside of the box and say "Hey...it doesn't matter and it isn't like that at all!" Sometimes ignorance is all it is... Thank you so much for reading! ~*Janelle~*

It is very sad, and the fact

It is very sad, and the fact that it's usually "the norm" to accept these things as fact is even sadder. Thank you so much for reading! :D ~*Janelle~*

Thank you so much for

Thank you so much for reading! It's so sad that some people just feel the need to lump others in a category...is it fear? The need for some strange form of order? I don't understand! ~*Janelle~*

You see

A lot of the images they get and accept as "fact" in Japan is from American television, and it just sets them up on how to view and react..Class wise, I can see what the other poster meant. Racism wise...well...that's another story. Haha. Sometimes it's less of "You're THIS race, I hate you!" and more of "YOU'RE A FOREIGNER, I HATE YOU!" But I have found that they are typically less racist than the average racist redneck. XD ~*Janelle~*

I only disagree with the

I only disagree with the comment on Japan. I've lived in both places and, in terms of racism, there's much more here, my friend. Much.

Impressed

Wow, I really enjoyed this rant. I love people who can actually step away from the stereotypes and just be human. Good stuffs and I see where you are coming from.

Black enough....

May I put in my two cents worth? As long as there are humans on this planet we will differentiate and label. If we ,god forbid, have all the same skin colour, we will go by the length of the nose or the slant of the eyes - anything to feel a bit superior! That is to be expected. And the racism or casteism or class distinction practised so subtly and with sophistication in India or for that matter in Japan would put any red neck in Alabama to shame!! I totally agree with you regarding those baggy pants and rap music is of course cacophony from another planet!! Ivar Tabrizi

No need to ever be sorry.

Loved it. It's so sad to be stereotyped before you're even known. Please keep writing.... Michele
