Speaking of the Ultimate Dream Job!
posted November 7, 2009 - 5:35pmWhen Xomba announced the dream job contest, I didn’t even have to think about what I would love to do for a living. I’ve been refining my skills in this area since I began to speak but nowadays I forget about my dream while I
concentrate on reality and all its drama. But every once in awhile, I startle myself in to remembering that although I have a job in Engineering for which I am tremendously grateful, there is another path that for some reason I haven’t pursued; perhaps out of fear of the unknown, of failure or of hard times.
I think about it mostly on Monday mornings when the time clock hits 7:59 AM and I’m fighting with the plastic lid on my Americano while I hang up my raincoat and settle in to my swivel chair. My coworkers shoot me a cheerful good morning as they walk past my open cubicle. I click on my desk lamp, turn on the computer and sip my coffee while both the hard drive and I start booting up at the same time in order to take on the day’s input and output. My dream job thoughts usually drift in to my conscious in the brief down time between my password log-in and the main screen.
I just really know that I was meant to be a voice over artist for animation films, cartoons or books on CD.
Ever since I learned how to speak, I could mimic different voices from the cartoons on television. I have a great ear for intonation and accents and a voice I can change at will. My Irish accent cannot be differentiated from a County Down local. I picked up the French and Spanish language quickly and blend in with native inflections. You think this means I might sing well. Not so to the lament of my father, a former professional country-western musician who is now enjoying the swan song of retirement. In fact, did you ever hear Rosanne Barr sing the national anthem at the San Diego Padres' game? Her singing is actually a step up from mine – ouch! But, oh, how I can speak.
My dream job would consist of heading to the recording or movie studio on Monday mornings, fighting with the plastic lid on my Americano, hanging up my raincoat, settling in to the swivel chair but this time, I would put on headphones and record dialogue for the day.
One of the universe’s rules is if you say what you want out loud, you can then own it and achieve it. Now I’ve said it. It remains to be seen if everything else will fall in to place, but the dream will always be there.

Thanks Prism, voicing cartoons and/or animated films
would be sooooo awesome. I have let myself get too comfortable in my life and the dream job contest reminded me that I have unfinished business to resolve!

Mia's Ultimate Dream Job
Great article! I love the way you take us to your real job and then dream job. I think your dream job would be so much fun and exciting. I have watched some of the disney insider makings of thier movies where they interview the voice over artists and show clips of them doing various parts. It's so amazing how you can't even tell who the voice is by their character's voice.
It would be great if you did have an opportunity to do this someday. Good luck in your dream and the contest!!

Voice modulation is a key
to hold attention. My biggest pet peeve is a monotone lecture; I just want to get up and leave the room when that happens! I, too, am happy and grateful for my job but it's so much fun to dream about what we really want to do from time to time. Thanks for commenting!

Follow your dream...
Just like you, I also dream to do something apart from my profession. When I was still in college, I often do hosting jobs during school affairs and many of my friends would tell me that I have a well modulated voice. Honestly, even without them telling me about it, I really enjoyed what I was doing then. Anyway, I'm quite happy now with my job, though sometimes I wish, I could do some hostings once in a while.
It would be great to do voice over for a living
On air radio personality would be fun too but I think I my first choice would be to voice cartoons/animated films. I'm also going to bring up Patrick Stewart here, but not because I sound like him! If you ever have a chance to hear him read A Christmas Carol on CD, it's worth your time. He does an unbelievable Scrooge!

I actually
I actually had a friend in the industry who recommeneded I get an agent and do voice overs. I never did it but I have thought about it. I guess, like you, it comes from growing up in a crossroads. Florida has such a cultural mish-mash that if you listen, you can hear all kinda things. Cuban spanglish, deep southern wanna-be rednecks, Puerto Rican yelling, urban rhythms and many, many more. It was always fun to mimic my friends. I did spend some time behind a mic semi-professionally in college. I was a DJ (excuse me - on air talent) for one of the college radio stations - 850 WRUF. At the time it was an oldies station - your hometown station for the best hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. It was quite an experience - one that I will never forget.
Maybe one day you can voice one of my books - maybe Danique, or better yet - Mom - HA! :)
