Sprinter Tyson Gay is Renamed "Tyson Homosexual" by Christian News Site

Never trust a computer to do a human's work. Apparently an overzealous find-and-replace filter at the Christian news service OneNewsNow automatically replaced the word "gay" with "homosexual" in an article about the U.S. track star Tyson Gay. The resulting story on the service's Web site referred to the runner as "Tyson Homosexual."

Apparently one of two things happened: either a) no human read the copy to correct the error, or b) a human DID read the story and didn't think anything was amiss. I'm not sure which copyediting "sin" is more egregious.

This should serve as a reminder to all writers: Don't ewes spill Czech two much too ketch yore miss steaks!

I live in the Eugene area and our local TV news and newspapers are full of articles about Tyson Gay. So far, the spell-check hasn't managed to change his sexual orientation yet.

By the way, Tyson ran the fastest hundred-meter dash in the world, Sunday, but it won't be entered in the record books, because the rules say the wind speed at a sprinter's back cannot exceed 4.4 MPH. Yesterday's wind was a little over 9 MPH, which may or may not have caused his fantastic speed which was 9.68 seconds.

Yeah, the old "wind-aided time" will definitely make it hard to tell how fast he really ran. 9 mph sounds pretty significant, in terms of racing in which hundredths of a second can matter.

I'm just a weekend racer (local 5-mile races), but I would just LOVE it if I had 9 mph at my back ... especially near the finish line!

Apparently the news service has some kind of software filter than changes words it doesn't like into ones it feels are more palatable to its readers.

Maybe they have a politically correct-checker on their system. I'm thinking about getting one for my home computer. When I do, perhaps my articles will become more popular with the liberal crowd.

comes in handy, even in dealing with the most "artificially intelligent" software!
