Steinbrenner: Joe Torre Out if Yankees Don't Win Series

George Steinbrenner's frustration with the Yankee's poor playoff performance has finally boiled over.

The Yankees principal owner said Sunday in an interview with the Bergen Record that if the Yankees didn't overcome their 2 games to none hole against the Cleveland Indians and win that playoff series, manager Joe Torre will most likely not be back with the team as manager. See the link below for the Bergen Record article.

"His job is on the line," Steinbrenner said said of Torre. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series."

Joe Torre is getting $7 million this year, which is the last year of his contract.

Steinbrenner also weighed in on the attack of the Canadian soldiers, the midges that buzzed around the head of Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain and rattled him enough to seemingly play a factor in his poor performance, which allowed the Indians to tied the game. The Yankees eventually lost the game in 11 innings.

George Steinbrenner said umpire Bruce Froemming should have stopped play during Friday night's insect swarm during Game 2 in Cleveland.

Steinbrenner said of Froemming, "He won't umpire our games anymore." Huh? How does old George have control over umpiring assignments?

Bad call

Yeah, Froemming missed that call... but I can't imagine he'd be wary of Steinbrenner's criticism, especially since he's retiring. Maybe he made that call to try to get in Steinbrenner's good graces, so he can get a part-time consulting job with The Boss after he (Froemming) retires. Maybe Steinbrenner could use an umpiring consultant to help his hitters get the most out of each at-bat. ;-)

Steinbrenner's Rant May Have Paid Off

Froemming just made a particularly BAD call (in favor of the Yanks)... Doug Mientkiewicz swung on a 3rd strike and Bruce ruled that it was no swing. The replay CLEARLY showed it was a bad call. Is it possible that Froemming has Steinbrenner's statement on his mind????

Good point

I went back and read the interview, it seems that's what he meant. I guess I'm just used to taking George's comments as pure bluster.

Bruce Froemming

Froemming is retiring after this season. I believe thats what Steinbrenner meant (by stating that Bruce wouldn't be umpiring any more Yankee games).
