Steinbrenner: Joe Torre Out if Yankees Don't Win Series
posted October 7, 2007 - 2:30pmGeorge Steinbrenner's frustration with the Yankee's poor playoff performance has finally boiled over.
The Yankees principal owner said Sunday in an interview with the Bergen Record that if the Yankees didn't overcome their 2 games to none hole against the Cleveland Indians and win that playoff series, manager Joe Torre will most likely not be back with the team as manager. See the link below for the Bergen Record article.
"His job is on the line," Steinbrenner said said of Torre. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series."
Joe Torre is getting $7 million this year, which is the last year of his contract.
Steinbrenner also weighed in on the attack of the Canadian soldiers, the midges that buzzed around the head of Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain and rattled him enough to seemingly play a factor in his poor performance, which allowed the Indians to tied the game. The Yankees eventually lost the game in 11 innings.
George Steinbrenner said umpire Bruce Froemming should have stopped play during Friday night's insect swarm during Game 2 in Cleveland.
Steinbrenner said of Froemming, "He won't umpire our games anymore." Huh? How does old George have control over umpiring assignments?
