Stephen King - On writing

Stephen King - On writing

II just read this book yesterday and it is one of the few Non fiction books by Stephen King.
It is like a manual for people who are beginners or intermediate writers.
It starts of with how every writer should concentrate on keeping the prose simple and direct . King doesn't like Adverbs , I don't like adverbs. The first word that comes to your mind should be in the first draft and i agree with him.
King hates Passive Voice , I hate Passive voice. The best writers of prose weren't good dialogue writers, true. He says the Vocabulary and grammar is like a toolbox and we better sharpen our tools.
Fiction should concentrate on the plot and the story than being a character study or even an over-researched thesis is the last thing anybody wants to read. He wants us to go to our happy place to write but doesn't necessarily have to be that way since King's best novels, Carrie and Salem's lot were written where he was disturbed the most, in some laundry where he used to work.
This book was written in 1999 and he was involved in an accident and almost died before completing this book.
Later part of the book describes his brush with ill fate when he was just taking his daily walk in June 1999. A very solid description considering he was still recovering when he completed the book and his leg was broken in 9 places. King acknowledges his Wife as being his Ideal reader and urges every writer to have an Ideal Writer in mind when they work.
I think the book is very helpful for writers like who don't want to be remembered for something i have written after my death but when I'm alive. Maybe i can get noticed when I'm alive by the commercial success my book s get, but do what. I think i will know when i write that i don't write for money , as King says i write for someone to be happy or making some one's day by somehow enriching their life with my small contribution.
I think the book becomes a little bit boring when King talks about finding publishers and stuff like how books aren't meant to be kept in safe boxes. I was expecting something like a boring manual when i picked up the book , coz the best fiction writers are good at only that and not Non fiction. Like always Stephen King surprises everyone.

On writing

I remember hearing about this book when it came out, maybe now I'll check it out, even though I'm a nonfiction writer.

Love Stephen King

I have read most of his novels - and some of them were pretty scary. So I'm definitely going to check this out. Thanks for the information.
