Stock Market Drops 367 Points on 20th Anniversary of Black Monday

On the 20th anniversary of the historic "Black Monday" stock market meltdown, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped nearly 367 points.

Investors sold stocks in response to disappointing earnings from blue chip companies such as Honeywell, 3M, Wachovia, Harley-Davidson, and Caterpillar. The Dow lost for the fifth straight day to closed at 13,519, leaving it with a weekly loss of 4.1%.

In October 1987 the Dow plunged on Friday, Oct. 16 and declined further on Monday, Oct. 19. While a point lost of 367 points sounds like a big drop, it is only 2.6%, as compared to the 23% drop experienced on Black Monday in 1987.
