The remains found in this area were from two different cultures that lived several thousand years apart and anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 years ago, During two different times in history when this Saharan region was habitable and green and had lakes filled with six-foot long perch. (Bones of many fish and wildlife were also found in this area.)

Some of the strange burials included a man buried in a sitting position on top of a turtle shell and in another grave a woman buried facing her two children aged about 5 and 8 with their hands clasped. Evidence also suggests that the woman and children were buried on a bed of flowers.

For the complete story on this amazing excavation, information on the two cultures (Kiffians and Tenerians), and how the area was "regreened" and desertified, click the link provided below.

The discovery is also featured in the September issue of National Geographic magazine.
