Stop Smoking- Psychological Reasons Why You Fail
posted January 5, 2009 - 10:43pmTo date there is no foolproof method created which enables a smoker to stop smoking for good. If you are following one method to eliminate your tobacco habit, don’t be so sure that this is infallible.
Failure to stop smoking even with the most widely used method is still expected. Not all of those who are quitting their habit can get positive results. When failure happens, there must be some reason for this. You must try to assess yourself and what went wrong during the process which leads to failure. You may need to exert more effort in the future if you want to succeed in your desire to stop smoking.
One reason why smokers fall back to smoking after trying hard to quit the habit is their mental attitude. Most failures stem from negative mental attitude. Probably there is the absence of a strong desire to stop smoking. Perhaps what was seated in your mind was not the strong yearning to kick the habit rather only the idea that you should quit. Intense doubts about your ability to completely get rid of your habit might have set in your mind during the quitting process. These doubts may have weakened your commitment to quit your habit. Reminding yourself about the main reason and the motivations you have for quitting may enable you to overcome the reasons of your failure.
Many smokers who strive to stop smoking yet failed in their yearning to quit may ask themselves why they cannot quit their bad habit when others have been successful. Besides overcoming physiological difficulties including withdrawal symptoms during the quitting process, some psychological reasons may also play an important role in a smoker’s failure to stop smoking. Sometimes the subconscious mind may have gathered ideas that serve as mental blocks preventing success in a person’s undertakings. According to experts, negative remarks by other people may have taken roots in your subconscious mind and has become a fixed idea. Someone might have remarked that you are addicted to smoking and are hooked forever there is no way you can eliminate this bad habit. Maybe such negative remarks have rooted in your subconscious mind making it impossible for you to stop smoking.
Another possible psychological reason why many fail to stop smoking is masochism. Masochism is a person’s need for self-punishment. Many psychologists explain that a lot of us one time in our lives develop the need for self punishment. Many people do things they shouldn’t do and later regret doing these. Psychotherapists are all aware that masochism can lead to self-destruction. Many experts believe that excessive smoking habit is at times masochistic. This can even be one of the many possibilities that a person fails to stop smoking.
There are also other reasons which are beyond a person’s capacity to correct making him unable to stop smoking. Some health conditions may contraindicate a smoker to stop smoking. People who are extremely nervous, agitated, and depressed should not stop smoking if such conditions heighten during the quitting process. If you experience excessive tension that you are in the verge of a nervous breakdown or intense emotional disturbance while trying to quit smoking, you better stop the process. Smoking is certainly the lesser adversary. If it is too difficult to completely stop smoking, at least cut down your cigarette consumption.
Finally, if psychological reasons are hindering you from completely stopping your habit, it will help if you quit with a friend or group of people. Quitting with a group may change your mental attitude and might help you succeed and completely stop smoking.
