The story of my brother’s fat cat B’stard

The story of my brother’s fat cat B’stard

My brother had a fat tom cat, being the young fool he was at the time, he named it after a character on TV called “Alan B’stard” who was played by a comedian by the name of Rik Mayall in a show called The New Statesman.

B’stard was your average, “out all night” tom cat, he was wise, savvy but often came home with minor injuries as a result of various fights he got into with the other local cats.

Time went by and B’stard got quite fat, my brother considered his diet and switched the cat over to a diet brand. Maybe it was to be expected, he was no longer a young cat, though he did start to wonder as to the cats health as he was still an active cat, rarely home some weeks, he could go out on the prowl for a day or two sometimes, he started to question the cat’s metabolic rate.

More time went by and B’stard did not loose an ounce, in fact, it appeared he had gained a couple more pounds, developed a wobble and would huff and leave as soon as his bowl was empty.

A job came up for my brother to work in central London, not a place to take an outdoor cat like B’stard, being used to a small housing estate and open fields, he would not be acclimatized to the busy streets of London.

So, my brother went to ask around is neighbors to see if anybody wanted to keep him. He felt the best thing for B’stard was to let him live out his life in his familiar area.

It turned out that B’stard had several names, he had a number of permanent homes, and a number of homes where he was an occasional dinner guest. It seemed that B’stard was very popular on the street boasting numerous addresses and “owners” already.

All my brother was doing was being simple another one of those owners, he was no more special to B’stard than any one of his neighbors who took the kitty-cat to be theirs.

While my brother worried about the cats health, B'stard was living like a king, eating several extra dinners a day, all served up by his multitude of personal human servants.

Needless to say, my brother called off his hunt for a new home for B’stard, and simple packed and left.

Our Opinions

Thanks mamamia07, Its strange how our opinions and feelings towards certain things change over time. Often they its the result of a specific experience other times is just a gradual shift. Maybe if you had a cat again your feelings would change towards it over time? but then that is quite a risk to take. My husband always hated dogs, he called them sh**ing machines with no purpose. One day he heard about abandoned puppies and felt so sad about their story he tried to adopt one of them. These days he is absolutely in love with our dog - I overhear him talking to her as if she is human. They cuddle on the sofa in the evenings and he takes her for a long walk when he gets up every morning, without fail, all weathers. He is still not that keen on other dogs, but I think he appreciates them a little more than he did. I am glad you enjoyed the story, thank you for your comment. Check out my Xomba Homepage

Cats!

I really liked cats at one time - I had one that slept at my feet for many years (wonder if it had other owners too...). But somehow lately in the last decade or so i have been paranoid about them. I lose it when my sons stroke one or try to lure them home. Lovely article! Here Is My Xomba Page Buy Video Games My profile

You help but love them!

The innocence of the lowly animal brings out such love and joy in a person. ; ) MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

Thanks MJ, I'm smiling about Calamity!

Thanks for your comment and the story about your cat. I can relate to it so much. I have had a number of cats and dogs in my life but a few stand out for a single special reason is that there was something exceptional about their personality. Calamity Jane sounds like she was a real character. We miss them forever once they are gone, but their memories never stop making us smile. A cat I had many years ago would hide around the sides of doors and leap out at you - 5 foot in the air, land and run off - much as you described, leaving you (or your terrified guests) in a state of shock. My dog has her own funny way, she knows when its dinner time - she collects her own dish (she takes her food bowl to bed with her at night), and then drops it at your feet, this repeats until said dish is filled. Clunk...clunk... If she can not find her dish - mayhem, complete and utter mayhem...65 lbs of dog running around house like crazy fool! sigh... Check out my Xomba Homepage

The Majestic Feline

I love the characters of our animal friends. They do make you wonder who is the pet at times. I had a female cat for about 20 years. She was a gift to myself on my 18th birthday, Calamity Jane, and she ruled the house. She got her name because everywhere she went, she caused a calamity and I love Doris Day! Whether she was jumping to the highest point in the house (bookshelves or refrigerator) it did not matter what obstacles were in her way, she would just knock them down. She would hide under the couch, bed or a chair and wait for you to walk by. Then she would pounce on your feet and scare the heck out of you! She would then run away and saunter back once you sat down, jump into your lap, purring in a pure majestic feline manner demanding affection. She even had out labador buffaloed into believing she was queen and would exert her authority over our miniature poodle by pinning her to the floor as only a feline queen could do. Oh and her meow could be the sweetest sound you ever heard at times. Of course those were the times when she was sitting at the front door with her latest friend, wanting to be let in so she could introduce you, be it a mouse, lizard, bird or bug. I miss Calamity. strangulation hahaha

Thanks AndAnotherThing2 I laughed when you say "with a sound reminiscent of strangulation" I have a cat that yawns and meows at the same time and it results in the strangest noises sometimes! Poor Ugly - maybe he is more dense than large! It is surprising how they can be such characters. Thanks for your comment. Helen

It is not only fat cats!

My parents are feeding a Siamese Cat who arrives for breakfast most mornings and announces it with a sound reminiscent of strangulation - a sort of deep eeeeoooooooooooooooooowl. I met Ugly (they name animals according to their characteristics)last week. He looked very thin and I could see why my parents saw a need to feed him but they had never picked him up - I did and nearly broke my back. Ugly is perhaps fifteen times his estimated weight. Thanks for the story of B'stard.

Thanks for sharing your story!

Thanks TylaMac - yes, what a lot of similarities. I think that is what amused my brother the most, is the number of names he had - and also that a few of his neighbors considered the cat to be theirs! They are characters - I have 2 indoor cats these days. One day the girl took off for several days and not being an outside cat I assumed she had come to harm. Well, she returned several days later not even hungry as if she had never left! just wandered through the front door - so its not just the tom cats! Check out my Xomba Homepage

Tom Cats

I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this because I had a cat exactly like that. He and his brother showed up when we moved into our first house many years ago. They were about 8 or 9 months old. The brother went back to his original home and "Yellow Kitty" as we called him stuck around for another year. Then we didn't see him for about six months and we thought poor Yellow Kitty must have met his demise. One afternoon we were walking through the neighborhood and spotted him on someone's porch with a pretty white female cat and four yellow tabby kittens. We were a little hurt but figured he had found a good home. About three months later he showed up at our back door mewing to come in as if he had never left. The next day he showed up with a gray tabby female who was pregnant with 8 kittens! We found homes for the kittens but nobody would claim the mother so we kept her. We ended up moving to the country later and brought Yellow Kitty with us. He was in paradise. He continued his wandering ways and would only come home for any length of time when he had some hideous injury from fighting. When he healed he would hit the road again. Almost all of our neighbors thought he was their cat and he had a different name at each home. It was always something generic like Tom or Big Boy. We haven't seen him for about 10 years now but he was the most entertaining pet we've ever had.
