Strike up the Fires -- A New Religious Debate is Afoot

Well, South Carolina Senator Larry Grooms has just created new license plates which were unanimously approved by the state's legislature.

Photobucket

Naturally, the (fill in weird activist group here, in this case it's the Americans United for Separation of Church and State) is pissed and claims that these license plates would be unconstitutional and a complete disregard for the separation of church and state. Apparently, Florida has similar license plates on the way as well.

Personally, I don't really care either way. I just find these fights amusing. You wanna know something that's really unconstitutional??? $5.00 gas prices.

Thought it was a joke when I saw it

It kind of looks likes something The Onion would have created. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator Join Xomba

i agree kj

it's an ugly plate indeed whoever came up with the design must have been blind.

I'm glad we agree!

Actually I've heard of that group. I guess I figured everybody else had heard of it too. If gas went up to $10 a gallon in the U.S., people and local and state governments would adapt, just as they're adapting to $5 a gallon. It's a myth that Americans have the need to drive more than anybody else (it's a psychological need, maybe), and in bigger vehicles. For example, in my area of Santa Fe County, NM, a new rail system is almost completed that will allow people to keep their cars at home and get to Albuquerque on public transit. It's already up and running in the Albuquerque area and is very popular. Most cities and large towns already have public transit systems that can be expanded if needed. There's also car pooling, which has been around forever, working from your home, and a number of other ways to save on fuel. If the need is there, America will adapt. It has to.

God Bless Texas

Texas has had "God Bless Texas" and "God Bless America" plates for a while. These have no bearing on the church and state debate. I'm not religious at all and it doesn't bother me in the least if someone chooses to put them on their cars. The only issue I see with it is that they do not have a plate for the Muslims or Jews or Scientologists. But, that might be because their organizations have never petitioned the state to come up with one. Lord knows, they've got a plate for almost everything else! Personally my favorite is the Horny Toad, "Keep Texas Wild" plate. I just wrote a short byte about it. FREE Domain Names FREE Cell Phones with Great Plans : Compare Carriers

Oh, Calm Down

I think we had a slight miscommunication. I completely agree activism is the American way. I was just throwing out a joke that anytime you hear a story about someone being offended, it's always some group you've never heard of before, that's all. And true dat about other countries. I just came back from Switzerland. Converted to $$$, it was just shy of $10 a gallon. But as for saying our gas should be $10 a gallon? That's a terrible idea for the economy. The US doesn't have the public transportation set up to be able to handle everyone not driving everywhere.

Image overload

Yeah, they're overdoing it: having a sunset, a cross, and a stained-glass window all on one license plate, just to drive the message home. It looks like an overly pimped MySpace page. At least they didn't try to fit in more images, like a picture of Jesus carrying the cross, or an image of his head wearing the crown of thorns.

Speciality plate

I don't see where there would any controversy over this, since this license plate is strictly optional. Man, it's an ugly plate, though. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator Join Xomba

get real, geniusboy!

Of course the license plates are unconstitutional-you don't have to be some "weird activist" to realize that! And what's "weird" about activism, anyway? It's the American way, or should be. As for gas prices, they should be $10 a gallon, not $5, because oil is a non-renewable resource and must be treated as such. Americans are spoiled rotten by low gas prices compared to other countries, plain and simple.
