Strong Earthquake in Southern California Today.

Strong Earthquake in Southern California Today.

Not too long ago actually, a little before noon, a strong earthquake was felt throughout Southern California. Currently measuring 5.8 on the richter scale, the quake was felt from Los Angeles through San Diego, and even into Las Vegas. No significant damage or injuries/deaths have been reported yet, but it hasn't been long since the occurrence.

You can read more about the Quake on FoxNews, here, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,393781,00.html .

I live in the San Fernando Valley, and we felt it pretty strong out this way. It wasn't nearly as bad as the infamous Northridge Quake, but it wasn't a tiny tremor either.

The chandelier above our dining room table swayed ominously, and the book cases looked as though they were in danger of collapsing on top of someone.

Luckily, my two small children didn't seem phased by the event. I thought for sure the three year old would get a bit panicky, but she didn't react much at all actually. She just looked at me and smiled, then proceeded to talk about her friend (the stuffy she was holding). The 6 year old was about as apathetic. She was slightly perturbed that I wanted to move her away from a book case, but otherwise unaffected. At least I don't need to worry about how traumatized they'll be from living in earthquake country!

Glad you are okay, pangeacat!

As a fellow California native (35 of my 40 years for me), I know only too well the devastation that earthquakes bring. My grandparents survived the '71 Sylmar quake while living in Van Nuys. I was stationed in Concord for the '89 Loma Prieta quake and still had many friends from school for the '94 Northridge quake. Every time I hear of an earthquake in Southern California, my heart skips a little because I have a long history and still some friends living there.

Glad that you are okay and that your kids held up!

DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Yes, glad all is well pangeacat

I grew up in San Jose and earthquake drills were more common than fire drills due to the San Andreas fault line. Watch out for those after shocks!

Peace,

Saw that on the news earlier

Glad to hear everything is ok.

We had a quake here in Illinois a few months back; about a 5.2, I think. That was the first real earthquake I ever felt in my life, if you don't count a couple of minor tremors. I actually felt the house shake a bit. It's a very unsettling feeling.

Luckily, it was a roller

As opposed to a shaker. I always prefer those, particularly with large quakes. They tend to cause much less damage, and far fewer injuries.

Thank you for the concern. :)

I was surprised at the kids though. They've never felt one that strong, and it didn't seem to phase them at all. Come to think of it, I'm not sure they've ever even felt a small quake. My eldest was asleep the last time we had a fairly minor quake that could be felt where we are, and she never woke up. I don't think the youngest was born yet, at that time.

I'm glad that it wasn't a pre-shock.

For a while there, I was concerned that it might be. I always wait a little while before concluding that all is back to normal. So, I thought with as strong as it was, and as far as it stretched, there was a possibility that we'd be looking at one a bit worse coming soon.

It can be...

especially if you live in an area that isn't prone to getting them regularly.

I don't really mind earthquakes, to be honest. But, I grew up in earthquake central. Get me in tornado alley, and I'm likely to ruin a perfectly good pair of pants if there's even a warning!

We didn't feel any after shocks

But, we're in the valley, a suburb of L.A. So, if we're not the epicenter, or close enough to it, and it's under about 4.0 and/or not a shaker, then it wouldn't have been that strong out where we are.

Thank you. :) Yeah, we're all okay. A friend called just after it happened, because she was at work and said that her whole building was swaying. A few of the buildings in the bigger cities were evacuated.
