Student Plagiarism and Assignment Design

Student Plagiarism and Assignment Design

Students plagiarize for a variety of reasons. One reason is that they find writing assignments boring and irrelevant to their daily lives, interests, or goals. Another reason students plagiarize is because teachers assign writing tasks that are generic enough for students to find completed papers on the topic on the Internet (And why should they invest time working on a generic assignment when they could be doing something that they find more interesting?). Rather than getting angry when students plagiarize, teachers should view student plagiarism as a warning that they need to pay more attention to their assignment design.
