Study Finds That Vitamin D May Curb Breast Cancer

A study finds breast cancer patients with low levels of vitamin D were much more likely to die of the disease or the spread of the disease than patients getting enough.

Ultraviolet light causes the skin to make Vitamin D. Although too much sunlight can raise the risk of skin cancer, 15 minutes a day without sun protection doctors believe may be beneficial.

Twenty-four percent of the women of the women who participated in the study had sufficient blood levels of Vitamin D at the time they were diagnosed with breast cancer. Those women who were deficient were nearly twice as likely to have their cancer come back or spread over the next 10 years, and 73 percent were more likely to die of the disease.
