Study Links Drop in Test Scores to a Decline in Time Spent Reading

A new report being released by the National Endowment for the Arts posits that the decline in test scores by American students can be directly attributed to a decline in time spent reading.

Not that it should come as any surprise, but anyone who interacts with school age children and teenagers via the Internet can attest to the decline in writing skills and critical thinking.

While there are some who expect us to believe that the solution is complicated, the way to correct this failure is painfully simple. One, parents MUST be involved with their child's life and education. Two, children MUST pick up a book and read it. On this second point, parents need to lead by example and read themselves, as children live what they learn.

It's time to stop blaming schools for the failure of parents.
