Super Bowl Just for Americans?

Super Bowl Just for Americans?

Are the super bowl celebrations just for Americans or can anyone join? As a Canadian I must admit it has taken me a few years to get into this huge sport celebration. As a Canadian I have seen interesting things on the show. Really the reason I seem to watch it now is because of these interesting facts:

Super bowl has become a big food fest - It seems that the Super bowl phenomenon has taken over the world. The audience is one billion world wide. The food consumption on this day is second only to Thanksgiving.

So as a Canadian here is my four step plan to celebrate the superbowl:

I will wear a costume that does not have a malfunction. In fact I will practice wearing it in front of the mirror to avoid this phenomenon.

Great food will be on hand including a requisite football ball cake. chips, wings and dips and anything else that is really gaseous.

I will decorate the room where the fanfare will be watched- including great things like football pictures of any sort. Noisemakers will be present to be used for those touchdowns. I will also make flags for the 2 two teams that are playing – and split my company into these 2 teams so there is rivalry and we can heckle each other..

At half time we will play a trivia game based on football facts of course- and has small tacky prizes on hand for the winners. And we will also play football scrabble using a scrabble board and start off the game with a football related word- and turn it into a group activity.

No I am not American but am willing to start this tradition as it is all about the party that goes on.

Cheers.

Re I meant more tongue in cheek

And here I was ready to order a smashed up car for the front lawn for a special bonfire. Too bad it sounded like fun - kidding.

I meant that more tongue-in-cheek, though

If you can imagine a bunch of people getting intoxicated while watching the game at a bar and having the celebration spill out into the street after their team wins the championship, all sorts of mayhem would ensue. It isn't specific to football, either. When the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championship a few years back, the "fans" in LA rioted and a few cars were torched. There's just something about Los Angeles and riots that go together like peanut butter and jelly. Watts Riots in 1964. Rodney King Riots in 1992. LA Lakers Riots are just part of the culture. why is it called football

Hi Richard Mann, It does seem to be a long drawn out game. Me I just watch the entertainment.

Re:Obligatory car to torch

Hi jdubhub, Okay I didn't know about the car. That is an interesting fact- does a special permit have to be taken out?

Re Canadians Welcome

Hi Idlewild, Honestly I am not sure when the Grey Cup is as the event really doesn't seem as big here. And I am not much of a sports fan really.

awwww... I nearly had the

awwww... I nearly had the same experience trying to watch European Nations Championships in New York some years ago. Nobody cared. So I headed to Little Italy and found a bar with a cable feed and watched Italy-Holland. It's all cultural. Not worth arguing over, but worth having a laugh at! Join Xomba Here

It's called Gridiron in Australia

I wanted to watch the Cowboys play on Thanksgiving back in 1995, while my ship was on deployment and making a port visit to Bunbury, which is south of Perth. I asked the bartender if they carried the channel that had the "American football game"--knowing all about Australian rules football and that football otherwise is what we Yanks called soccer. She looked puzzled for a moment, then her eyes lit up as she said "Ah, Gridiron." While I didn't get to watch the game because they didn't carry the channel, I did get to taste some wonderful Australian beer (Victoria Bitter) to help ease my "pain". why is it called football?

mmm... to the rest of the world football is an entirely different sport, one actually played with the feet. Why is it called American football? surely handball or rugby. Admittedly Ozzie rules football is also a hand sport involving kicking each other. There was a bit of a fad in the UK when they started showing American football live, but think most people got bored as an 80 mins game lasts 3 hours in which nothing happens most of the time. Sure, cricket is even more uneventful but has tradition on its side and one can peacefully go to sleep in the knowledge the game will still be on when one wakes up. The Superbowl is a big non-event for the world, unlike the World Cup Final. Join Xomba Here

Just be sure to have the obligatory car to torch at the end...

If you want to celebrate like many Americans do, make sure you have an old car on the street in front of your house that the winning team can torch in celebration. It's a time honored tradition of such great American cities as Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, and Philadelphia. Wait, Philadelphia hasn't ever won a Super Bowl--they've been waiting so long, their "torch car" is a Model T. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

Canadians welcome

Sure, anybody can celebrate the Super Bowl. Especially if they like football, parties, drinking, eating, going to parties, or any of the above. It's a good reason to get together with friends and party, even if you're not a fan of American football. I like any occasion to eat and drink and have fun. Speaking of which, when is the Grey Cup? Sounds like a good excuse for a party...
