Surfing in Malta

Surfing in Malta
-This may come as a surprise but yes, Malta does get surf!

Where is Malta
Malta is in the Southern meditteranean, 93km south of Sicily

History
Most locals would choke on their beer when told that Malta's waves are surfable. Over the last few years a small group of wave riders have emerged on our shores.

Getting hold of a surf board in Malta
This is not an easy task! There is one surf shop in Malta and that can be found in Sliema, at the Plaza Shopping centre. Other then that there are currently no places that rent out boards. However you can hold of some local surfers through MySpace or Facebook, many of them are very friendly and sometimes willing to lend boards!

Where to surf
A guide to surfable beaches in malta can be found on www.wannasurf.com. However there are many unexplored peaks which need discovery. (NB: Beware of reefs and sea urchins). As of yet there are no surf schools in Malta, but the surf shop Freeway Surf is planning on opening one in the near future!

Surf Report
No specific surf reports are available for any particular or beach or even really for Malta in general. However www.windfinder.com can give you a general idea of swell and wind conditions.

Surfing clothing
There are many shops selling surf clothing. RipCurl, O'neill, Quicksilver are all represented. There are also many shops selling wetsuits. These are clustered near the Msida marina.

Surf's Up!!!!!!
