Survive the City - making some cash for the move
posted November 21, 2006 - 11:56pmSo as I mentioned yesterday, I've been babysitting now and then so that I can earn some extra NYC cash. I love babysitting. Kids are fun.
The kids I babysat for last night were SO CUTE. I picked them up from school - the first time we've met by the way - and they were so excited to see me. I couldn't believe how animated they were. "Heather Feather" they instantly called me - a name I'm not fond of, but somehow coming out of their cute little mouths it made me smile.
"Heather's really pretty isn't she," Sunny kept saying to Isabelle. I wasn't quite sure how to show a 4 year old that I was flattered by the comment.
"So do you know what we're going to do when we go home?" I asked them as we drove away from the school.
"Yup," Sunny replied as he swung his legs back and forth in his car seat. As I looked at the two of them in the back of the car sitting in their carseats, I had flash forward images of me driving home with two carseated kids of my own. Oddly enough it felt kinda normal. Am I hitting the baby stage already!! Scary!
"Yup," he said, "We're going to go home and take a bath and go right to bed because we're sick."
"Sick?" I questioned. "You don't look sick at all."
"Our boogers are green," he replied so matter-of-factly
"Guess what Heather," Sunny then said
"What?" I said
"I have 11 girlfriends," he said very proudly
"Eleven!" I said, "That's a lot to keep up with."
Then he went on to explain and I quote, "Well I got this one today but I'm only keeping her for the day."
"What's her name?" I asked.
"I don't know," he responded. "Like I said, I'm only keeping her for the day."
As Bill Cosby would say, "Kids say the darndest things."
We got home and they went wild. I didn't realize they could have so much energy. Don't get me wrong, they were great kids, but man I was ready to calm down and practically take a nap and they were ready to party. When their father got home I was shocked at how young he looked. For the first time in my life I was babysitting in a situation where the parents were more my peers than the children!! The evening of babysitting, though I do babysit often, really made me realize that I love children and the experience is rewarding, but for now I'll take the cash and move on. I'm not quite ready to leap into Mommyville even if some people my age have already made the plunge.
That night Isabelle told her father, "I'm awake because I'm a princess and princesses can do what they want."
Good attitude Isabelle. I think I'll remain a princess just a little bit longer.
