Sustainability of Human Progress by John McCarthy

John McCarthy is an emeritus professor of computer science at Stanford University, with a particular interest in artificial intelligence. This is the main page regarding futurology and the sustainability of human progress. With many links to his own work and that of others, McCarthy paints a picture of a world of plenty. "In particular, we argue that the whole world can reach and maintain American standards of living with a population of even 15 billion." The numbers and the science may show what is possible, but (as even he admits at times) it is politics and human actions that decide what is probable. But without quantifying human actions, such models of sustainable futures are little more than works of fiction.
