SWEENEY TODD Still Alive on Billboard Charts
posted April 23, 2008 - 9:57amThe film version of Stephen Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD was something of a mild disappointment at the box office – not a disaster by any means, but also not a smash. But the soundtrack album continues to have a shelf life long after the film has come and gone from movie theatres.
Now in its 17th week on the Billboard albums chart, the SWEENEY TODD soundtrack is placed comfortably at #80 – up an impressive 19 places from last week, when it held at #99. The CD peaked at #11 – a far more impressive showing that the 1970s original cast album, which made it to #78 (a very good showing for a Broadway album).
The soundtrack album has not been certified gold (sales of 500,000 units); but CD sales have been in a severe slump for years, and reaching the desired gold or platinum status is much harder to do today.
