Symptoms of Pyometra
posted May 11, 2009 - 2:21amIf your female cat or dog is suffering from pyometra she may experience some of the following symptoms.
She is likely to be more withdrawn, irritable, consume large amounts of water and experience incontinence.
She may eventually exhibited pronounced abdominal swelling and a white vaginal discharge of pus.
If your dog or cat has pyometra the prognosis isn't good. According to what I have read, without surgery your pet will likely become septic and die from this serious bacterial infection in her uterus.
Yet another great reason to have your dog or cat spayed, as it will be unlikely for them to acquire pyometra. Although not impossible.
Pyometra can be termed as:
"Open Pyometra" if the cervix is open, which allows for drainage of the infected purulent fluids.
"Closed Pyometra" if the cervix is fully closed. This is much like appendicitis as the uterus could rupture and spill purulent fluids into the abdomen, likely resulting in death.
