Ishaan Awasthi, an eight-year old dyslexic child has difficulties in reading, writing and understanding letters, words and sentences. His world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colours, fishes, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. And Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. For that he gets punished time and again.

On the other side, Ishaan's elder brother, Yohaan is always at the top, be it in sports or studies. Yohaan is shown to be supportive of his brother.

When Ishaan gets into far too much trouble for his parents or rather his dad to handle, he is packed off to a boarding school to be 'disciplined’. Things are no different at his new school, and Ishaan has to contend with the added trauma of separation from his family.

One day a new temporary art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh, played by Aamir Khan bursts onto the scene, who infects the students with joy and optimism. Nikumbh soon realizes that Ishaan is very unhappy, and he sets out to discover why.

Ram Shankar Nikumbh approaches his parents and tries to convince them about Ishaan's condition but his dad is not totally convinced. Ram then requests some added time from the principal to coach Ishaan and the principal finally gives in.

With Ram's unique style of teaching, Ishaan soon becomes familiar to numbers and letters. He learns complicated sentences. To show Ishaan's painting talent to the world and to boost his confidence, Ram shankar Nikumbh organizes a painting competition for teachers and students alike. Ishaan is declared the winner for his painting, while his teacher Ram shankar Nikumbh whose paiting is a portrait of Ishaan is declared the runner up.

At the end of the year, when Ishaan's parents meet the teachers, they are speechless to see the change in Ishaan. Ishaan has great marks in all the subjects. Ishaan's father is in tears upon seeing this change, and realizes his mistake. Before leaving for the holidays, Ishaan runs to hug his teacher who tosses him in the air.
