Teen Allowance & Financial Responsibility
posted September 15, 2009 - 1:54pmFirst you should determine which expenses your teen should be responsible for. Such as weekly entertainment, school lunches, clothing, or things such as magazine subscriptions.
Then determine the cost of each item on your teen's responsibility list. Then determine the appropriate amount of allowance per week, or bi-weekly, or monthly. Be sure not to set too tight of a budget. Set a fair amount of allowance for clothing and entertainment and once its gone, its gone. But this will be their Base amount.
You can then make a list of chores around the house that are above and beyond what your teen's normal chores currently are, and place a price amount for each chore.
Then talk to your teen about which chores they would like to do each week. Those will be the chores they are responsible for during that week.
Then add the base amount you came up with and add the amount they will earn for the chores they choose for that week and that will give you the appropriate allowance amount.
TIPS:
Make sure you talk to your teen as to how the money needs to be used. Lunch money is to be spent on lunch. That way they do have a clear understanding of what their money responsibilities are.
Good Luck All
