Tell Me Why: Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Tell Me Why: Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Why do we have wisdom teeth? To cause us pain, anguish and suffering! Or so it would seem...

No one knows for sure but wisdom teeth seem to be a throw back from our Stone Age ancestors whose diets required more chewing power and whose giant jawbones accomodated 32 teeth for the job! Not to mention dental care wasn't very high on the list back then- if a tooth fell out due to decay, the wisdom teeth closed the gap by pushing the other teeth forward.

Now here we are all evolved with a totally different diet and way better dental care (well, some of us) and yet those pesky wisdom teeth still seem to be hanging around. This is what is called a 'vestige'- a leftover organ (or structure) that has little or no use for us now, even though it was quite necessary early in the development of our species. So think of wisdom teeth as a token of our caveman days. Awww, isn't that nice?

Since the little buggers have nowhere to go, it means one usually ends up in the dentist's chair for a simple and very common wisdom tooth extraction.

I might have a reason for wisdom teeth

Not that I eat bark or anything... But I have three of my wisdom teeth intact. The bottom right one was lost in an old war injury when I was 15. But just today, I was eating a salad that had candied pecans on it. Wouldn't you know that one of them landed itself in the space where my tooth used to be and cut up my gum like a Samurai. I literally thought to myself "Where is my wisdom tooth when I need it?"

That would be a whole other topic!

Dental care Unaffordable

I am among those to which dental care has been unaffordable, I go when I have an emergency only. Income level does not allow it and my insurance doesn't cover it. Wisdom teeth caused me all sorts of misery. Including costing me 3 back molars. One had roots twisted around the bone. One came in sideways and they were all so huge they cracked my back molars, splitting them. Now I have no teeth in back on top both sides and bottom one side. But I manage ok anyway. Someday I will hope to get partials.
