Temping Comes to the Chi-Chi Coffee Business

Temping Comes to the Chi-Chi Coffee Business

When you think of temporary workers, administrative assistants, bookkeepers, and factory workers might come to mind. But the upscale coffee bar business has become such a big industry that I recently discovered that there is actually a temp agency that specializes in placing coffee baristas in shops around the City.

As the company's Web site says, "TempTamp is a new company dedicated to providing excellent temporary barista service to NYC's coffee shops."

It makes sense, I guess: considering the prices of Starbucks and other premium coffee drinks these days, and the demanding nature of the people who shell out four dollars or more for these drinks, you can't have just any Tom, Dick, or Serge pulling someone's double shot mocha medium foam latte with a sprinkle of Madagascar chocolate.

Enter TempTamp. It says that it provides temp baristas in a cost-effective way, handling the paperwork, taxes, etc. and most importantly, providing experienced baristas (they say they offer their own training). The company says its employees are familiar with the major coffee makers and keep up with brewing and roasting technologies.

So if anyone out there is looking for a new line of work, maybe being a temp barista is in the cards...

Portland-Seattle is the Barista Capital of Coffee Brewers

New York ain't got nothing on the Great Northwest when it comes to coffee. I think the richest and best coffee is made by Stumptown Coffee Roasters, in Portland, Oregon!

Stumptown is in the process of opening in New York City, and New Yorkers will, finally, experience what rich coffee is all about.

I, myself, go through the hassels of traveling on three buses and a twenty mile journey to buy Stumptown Coffee. It's an addiction that's easy to explain.

I use an Espresso Machine (a DeLonghi) to make my coffee. My machine uses 20 lbs. of pressure. When you put the coffee in the holder, packed tight, of course, most coffees, including Starbucks, Portland Roasting, Pete's, and Tully's, loose the dark color, as the coffee drops into your cup fairly fast, although they do hold up better than our parents old standard of Folgers or Yuban.

Stumptown's deep dark savory flavor and color lasts far longer, thus, giving you more for your money, more for your taste buds, more of the essense of smell, and produces a whole experience of what coffee is all about. Stumptown Coffee is an adventure attractable to all the senses.

Stumptown has figured out the perfect roasting process.
The company offers some very special, limited edition, coffees via their website. It's worth a visit. And, this is not a commercial, but, you should try this coffee!

Northwest coffee

When I read you comment my first thought was, "He should turn this into a xombyte" ... and indeed you did!

I wasn't saying NY coffee is better than elsewhere; I just thought it interesting that there enough high-end coffee bars that a barista temp agency would actually be a viable business.

I've been to the Northwest many times (both of my sisters have lived in Oregon), but ironically it was long before the area become known for its coffee, and before Starbucks even existed.
