V. Terran Counters
Terrans are the human race in Starcraft. They rely on technology to defeat their enemies.
The Terrans are very mobile in their tactics. They are able to
adapt to many different situations
and if played right, can be better than both the Protoss and Zerg.
II.
1. Defensive Line
The Terrans are very well suited for the single player campaign. The Terrans are a very
defensive race. They have bunkers, missile silos, and siege tanks. These three in combination
provides a very formidable defense for the computer to defeat. The general way to set up a
good defense in single player missions is to find a chokepoint. Chokepoints are places on the
map where enemies must pass through in order to enter your base. When the chokepoint or
chokepoints have been found, immediately set up 2-3 bunkers, and place 4 siege tanks behind the
bunkers. Also built 2-3 missiles silos close to this defensive line and always keep a SCV around
to repair any damaged tanks or structures. Fill the bunkers with 1 Firebat and 3 marines each.
This should provide you with a solid line of defense against the computer. Now sit back and
build up the rest of your forces as you watch the computer get slaughtered by your defenses.
2. Offensive Strategies
The most important thing to remember about Terran offense is the "Frog Jump" method. The "Frog
Jump" method uses 3 critical units. The siege tank (with siege mode), medics, and marines. The
basic strategy of the "Frog Jump" is to move all your forces close to the enemy base. Then
deploy your tanks into siege mode. Next send some forces to lure the enemies out. As soon as
the computer starts to attack, send your bait party back and watch as the computer units get
pummeled by the siege tanks. This method is also useful for taking out defensive structures.
The siege tank has the longest range of any unit in the game. This makes it extremely powerful
at destroying defenses. An effective method to destroy photon cannons, sucken colonies, or
bunkers is to move siege tanks just outside the range of the defenses and then set them in
siege mode. The defenses will get pummeled while your tanks remain unharmed. Remember to always
back up your tanks with marines and medics as the computer will most likely send units to
destroy your tanks.
3) Expansion strategies.
The Terrans can establish and expand very quickly and safely. This is due to the siege tank.
A strategy for expansion is to send a group of 3 siege tanks, 12 marines and 4 medics to a
new resource site. This group should easily clear out any defenders. When the site is clear
send in a SCV and commence construction of a command center. Now put the siege tanks into
siege mode and you have just created a strong line of defense for your new expansion.

1. Defense
Defense in multiplayer should follow the same basic ideas as single player but with some
differences. One difference is to remember to always construct as least one missile silo
close to your defensive line. This is extremely important because many Zerg and Protoss players
will use Lurkers and Dark Templars. The missile silo has the ability to detect cloaked unit
and is a good way to protect your defensive units against the invisible threats. Another
strategy that can be used in multiplayer is called "Layout Defense." This basically means
that you layout your base in such a way that the bunkers and missile silos and surrounded
by other structures such as supply depots, barracks, ect. This makes it harder for enemy melee
units to attack these structures and allows the marines to still attack the enemies. The com-
scan is also a vital part of Terran defense. If your science vessel or missile silo is destroyed
the com-scan provides a quick and effective way to detect invisible enemy units.
2. Offense
----------
The "Leap Frog" method is still a very potent method in multiplayer. However, some extra things
should be taken into account when playing against a human. When using the "Leap Frog" method
be sure to have a form of detection ready. 1-2 science vessels provides adequate detection and
also provides some nice abilities to augment your battle group. Another vital component is the
use of a com-scan. The com-scans should always be used to gather intelligence on your enemy.
However, always leave enough energy for one scan when attacking the enemy base. This scan
should be used in case your science vessels are destroyed and the enemy is attacking with
cloaked units. Lastly, a popular strategy is to wall your enemies in and not allow them to
expand. In order to do this, send your battlegroup to a chokepoint in front of the enemy base.
Then just set up a defensive line there. Your enemy will not be able to expand and will
eventually run out of resources and lose. Be cautious with this strategy when playing a team
game as many times expert players and their allies will attack your battlegroup from the rear
as well as the front and sandwich your forces. Many times this proves to be effective and
will break the "Wall In."
3. Expansion
------------
In a good multiplayer game, whoever expands successfully wins. Multiplayer games are all about
how fast you can gather resources and then pump out combat units. Terrans should use the same
expansion strategy in multiplayer as they use in single player. However, one thing to keep in
mind is to always build 2-3 missile silos at your expansion in order to counter cloaked
threats.
IV.
Below are combinations of units and technologies that work well together.
1. Siege tanks, marines/medics, science vessels.-this is the ultimate combination for a
strong defense and offense.
2. Marine/Medic-bread and butter of you forces. This combination is deadly against almost
any unit.
2. Firebats/marines/medics.-Good around good assault force for lightly defended targets
3. Siege tanks and dropships.-Load two tanks and 8 marines and drop into the enemy resource
collectors.
4. Siege tanks and vultures.-Vultures mine with map and are effective at taking out melee
units such as zerglings and zealots. Spider mines also deal with cloaked threats. Later, the
vultures can be used to support the siege tanks just like the marines.
5. Two ghosts (with cloak) and Two nukes.-the reason I say two is because many people will
notice the words on the screen saying "Nuclear launch detected." They will immediately scan
their base and see where you have targeted. If you have two nukes and target two different
areas far away from each other at the same time, the enemy will most likely not suspect the
second nuke and will stop searching for the red nuclear dot after he has found the first one.

These are the units that I found most effective at countering these threats.
1. Against Terrans
Marine: Siege tanks/vultures
Firebat: Vultures, Siege tanks
Ghosts: Spider Mines, anything that can see stealth and is non-mechanical. Com-scan
and marines work well.

Goliath: Siege tank and marines/medic
Wraith: Goliath and marines/medic
Battle Cruiser: Ghosts/Goliath/Wraith
Science Vessel: Wraith
Valkyrie: Anything except Wraith
