That's Just Bull

That's Just Bull

Imagine driving along a rural highway on a beautiful afternoon, minding your own business as well as your side of the road when all of a sudden, you see a movement out of the corner of your eye that draws your line of vision toward the treeline.

Bull1Bull1

Your first reaction is a sharp intake of breath as your right foot, apparently having a mind of it's own, automatically moves over to the brake pedal, hovering, not sure which way to move.

bull2bull2

You glance in the rearview mirror, and upon verifying that there is indeed, no traffic behind you, you pull over in order to get a real good eyefull of an elusive (especially from October to December)and rather large resident of the forest.

bull3bull3

Now some might argue that they see these denizens of the woods all too often on the highways and that, due to the dangers they impose on unwary travellers, the more elusive the better. I would tend to agree, as far as seeing them on the roadways. I have to admit though they are a magnificent animal - in my eyes, the royalty of the forest and each time I have the good luck in seeing one, I feel honored as if some great privelege has been bestowed upon me.

bull4bull4

As the summer season gets into full swing, so do the insects. Large animals like the moose, deer and bears have a tendency to come out into the open in order to escape the flies and mosquitoes...many head for the roadways as the air seems to blow a bit more freely there. Many cause accidents -especially at night - because drivers are unaware, or are just not on the lookout for them (and they can be difficult to spot). The results of this complacency can be extremely costly, sometimes the exchange is in lives.

Just a word of caution for those travelling down those rural-type highways, at night and even during the day, be alert to the critters that may be out and about - they, like you, are only trying to get wherever they are going.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, recently issued this bulletin:

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.

"We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear manure:

Black bear manure is smaller and contains lots of berries and Squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear manure has little bells in it and smells like pepper."

Lol...That is hilarious, and probably true. We don't have grizzlies up here just a healthy population of black bears. If I find black bear skat I don't stick around to check it out I make myself scarce. Thank you for the kind comment.

Even when one is staring down at me in my canoe from the bank of a creek during the rut...scary beautiful.
