The $59,750 Bed: How Much Do You Really Need to Spend on a Mattress?
The $59,750 Bed: How Much Do You Really Need to Spend on a Mattress?
I saw this ad in one of my favorite publications for home design and décor, Dwell Magazine. It posed the question, “Who would spend $59,750 on a bed?” I was intrigued and I thought about whether or not I could ever justify spending almost $60,000 on a bed.
I am of the opinion that a bed is a good investment. If you get 8 hours of sleep a night, you spend a third of your life in bed and a good nights rest is essential to your health and happiness. If you can afford it, you should never skimp and should not even balk at paying $800, $1000 or even $2000 for a bed that is well constructed of good quality materials and provides you with a comfortable and relaxing night’s sleep. (I also believe one should not buy cheaply made shoes, if you can afford better.)
With that being said, would I ever consider paying sixty-grand for a bed when many families can’t even scrape that much together to buy a house? Will that bed carry me off to dreamland so much better than a top-of-the-line Sealy Pillowtop Poaturepedic or a Simmons Beauty Rest or some other high quality mattress? Probably not. As a matter of fact, I’m fairly sure that I would not sleep very well in that bed knowing that I spent so much money on it. Even if I had the money to spend, I’d sleep a whole lot better on my $1500 pillowtop (got it on sale) and my 1000 thread count percale sheets. (Especially if I took $50,000 – $55,000 that would’ve been spent on an excessive luxury and bought some poor family a small home so that they could get on their feet or maybe pay for some bright, motivated, yet underprivileged student’s college education.)
I’m not opposed to spending money on myself. Would I buy myself a $2000 camera or spend a couple of grand on a pinball machine for my rec room? Sure I would, why not, I deserve it. I might even buy one of their lower priced beds, (They start at just under $5000), if I found them to be more comfortable than my $1500 bed. However, $59,750 on a bed or half a million for a car? No way! I could never justify that type of over-indulgence. Not even if I were as wealthy as Bill Gates or even “The Donald” Trump. By no means do I live a spartan lifestyle, but it doesn't take much to make me happy. (Especially not a bed that costs $59,750.)
These beds are hand-crafted by a family that has been making beds for 150 years and each one may take weeks to build. I am sure that they are of the highest quality using the best materials available. According to their ad, Hastens has models available from $4,475 to the $59,750 Vividus. If you are interested in seeing them visit their website. I applaud their premium craftsmanship and commitment to excellence. They are obviously talented craftsman that command a high price for their work.
I'd like to hear others' thoughts on wealth and excessive luxuries, social responsibilty, happiness or any other subject that I might have touched on in this byte.

Even if their beds are
Even if their beds are fantastic, their ad campaign seems...bizarre (yet I bet it is highly effective!)

Yes, quite "artistic." Still not worth sixty-grand!
Unless those are accessories that come with the $59,750 model...
Nah, still not worth sixty-g's.
