the ageless packer gets another shot

alright, i admit it. i was one of the voices brett favre heard at the end of last season telling him to hang up his cleats & call it a career & start working on his speech for canton. stand down & let a new generation of quarterbacks lead the nfc into the new milennium... tony romo & eli manning & the like. & now he's only a game away from a rematch with the team against which he hit the peak of his career.
like the afc championship game, this is a week 2 rematch. then, favre & the packers picked apart the giants in an early road win that set the tone for green bay's season to come. this time around... the game shifts to lambeau. & mr manning? i don't think yer gonna like playing in lambeau this time of year. obviously, this isn't predicted to be as much of a blowout as the afc game. but green bay is going to be the general sentimental favourite (except among favre-haters) as much as new england. probably more than new england.
& it's gotta drive last year's nfc champion chicago bears nuts to see this. they beat green bay TWICE this year (of only 3 g-bay losses) & still didn't get a whiff of the playoffs.

why do we hate the patriots?

see... i grew up in toronto. & if you grow up in toronto there's two sports towns that jostle for second place behind montreal as the most HATED sports towns. one's new york. the other's boston. i hated the new england patriots before i could name five nfl teams. the celtics were my dirty little secret back in the day, but a shudder still runs up my spine at the thought of another red sox world series or boston bruins stanley cup. but a coupla years back i decided to stop hating tom brady & start wondering why everyone was so gung ho about this peyton manning feller. i remember a monday night game mid-season. indy-jacksonville, if i'm not mistaken. where the talking heads pre-game were discussing whether or not peyton manning WAS (not might be, but WAS) the greatest quarterback ever. & each of them in turn said that if he won another superbowl or two... maybe another mvp or two... then maybe... wasn't until the FOURTH guy spoke that anyone mentioned the OTHER undefeated quarterback who already had the credentials they were speculating a fellow might need to be considered the greatest ever. the patriot faithful (who i remember gloating at during their superbowl loss to favre 120 years ago) aside, so many people i know (fans & casual observers alike) HATE the patriots & want ANYONE else to win the superbowl. i don't think there's been a more hated superbowl champion prospect since the old aikman-smith-irvin cowboys.

or maybe not...

The ageless wonder

Yeah, I was also thinking at the end of last season that Favre should just hang it up... last season was disappointing for his team and he had a lot of sub-par performances. This season has been amazing for them. If GB was playing anyone but the Giants I'd be pulling for them. Actually I'd feel good for Favre if the Pack won. And I'd like to see ANYBODY beat the Patriots.
