The Baby Chronicles : Volume I
posted April 20, 2008 - 12:37am The Baby Chronicles were meant to be a day to day log of what has been happening with my daughter, Maya, and I from the first day that she was born. Well, that statement should tell you that I am a first time mom. In my experience, there isn't
enough time or energy in the first six weeks for that kind of a commitment. I was too busy trying to get a schedule that worked for both me and Maya. Let me tell you that Maya is not easy to negotiate with.
Instead of day to day, I am going to give you an update of what I can remember from the past two months up until now. From here on out, I will get to a computer when I can for updates. There is no better place to start than the birth itself.
I had plans to do everything natural. No medical induction, no medically breaking my water, no pain medication. I was going to do everything natural and that was that. Things did not go as planned. First of all, Maya was a week late so I had to be induced. The induction didn't break my water, so that had to be done medically as well. Then the biggest one of all, I had to have an epidural because the nurse thought it would be best for me and the baby. Just a piece of advice: Everything may not go wrong but everything may not go as you planned. I'm not saying there will be complications but just be prepared to bend a little bit.
The hardest things for me so far have been the breastfeeding and the schedule making. The breastfeeding can be difficult if the baby has trouble latching on. Maya, of course, did. I got scabs on my nipples and would almost come to tears at times. I saw a lactation consultant and things got much better and easier. The schedule making is sort of tied in with the breastfeeding because I had to get used to waking every two hours to feed, burp, and change Maya. After taht schedule was finally reached, her appetite increased and I had to adjust. Now it's to the point that I can get things done during the day and plenty of sleep at night because I know her schedule. So, never fear if you are having trouble with breastfeeding and schedule making because it does get better.
I am going to cut it off for now because it's late but next time will be longer and more in depth, I promise. Just wanted to get started for you guys.
JUST A NOTE: I am not any kind of a medical advisor. I did recieve some of this advice from my physicians but that doesn't make it medically credible. I have no training whatsoever in that field. I just want to say that you should talk to your doctors too not just go by my column.
