The beginnings of a journey

The beginnings of a journey

I can’t stand this place anymore. And I can’t pin point the problem so I’m going to leave - hopefully find out if it is this place that makes me feel bad or if it’s inside me. If it is in me, then I have a problem in that I wont be able to run away from it; it’s something that will have to be worked on.

Leaving this place will be easy. The people are horrible to each other. They almost seem crazy, driven for the need to see others suffer just for reassurance of themselves. They easily forget where their loyalties lie and they think nothing of exploiting the weak.

Heroes are no more. Every last one has been dead and buried for a good long while. If your longest-serving companion has been Father Time, then you may remember a true hero, but you’d have to think back a long way. The idols of today will lead you nowhere. For they’re not trying to reach home after ages away; nor are they questing for peace. They are egos turned pseudo-gods. They demand your awe and respect simply by being able to afford all that glitters. Are there any genuine heroes out there? I’ll let you know if I meet one on my journey.

Maybe you're looking for heroes in the wrong places? Alternatively, since you seem to have a clear definition of what a hero should be to you why not be your own hero? I see heroes every day in the hospital, I have friends that I consider heroes, volunteer aid workers in developing countries are heroes, although I do not agree with the Iraq war in the first place I consider the US soldiers serving there to be heroes because they are willing to sacrifice everything for something they believe in, and that in essence is what being a hero is all about, real heroes are not famous idols they are everyday people like you and me. So go on and be a hero!

with ye there, Martin. Those ARE the heroes we should be looking up to. It's just sad that we don't.

I wrote this when I was feeling quite cynical - don't worry; I'm not always that depressing :p
