The Captain's Knot
posted November 8, 2007 - 2:55amFirst Rahul Dravid did it and now Sachin Tendulkar turned down the offer of test captaincy.Who else is next?. They both have cited personal reasons -no major clarifications. Why are these senior players saying no to lead India in the test series and avoiding or shying away from this responsibilities.
Is it because of seniors not recieving the treatment they deserve or they are paving the path for younger players to take the centrestage, or they are not in good rapport with the board members. No body knows the answer but we all are allowed to make our own assumptions. Right.
Past failures, personal reasons, shrinking responsiblities, no support from board-the list can go on and on.These decisions can be sensitive, sensible or selfish. The Indian team is always in a crossroad as far as captaincy is concerned. You can call it the 'captains knot'.To head the indian team for test series the team needs a player with experience and that too if team india will be playing the upcoming test matches with Austrailia. And senior players like dravid, sachin and ganguly, kumble or any one in their league would have done good for the team. They would have worked well for the team in the long run.
Now all eyes are on MS Dhoni-young captain with a young team.He seems to be the frontrunner. He seems to have full support from BCCI. He is india's one day captian, he can be the test captain as well. But is he ready for this dunting task Will this not put a load of pressure on this young Dhoni. Is he groomed to lead the team for test matches. Is he a complete test player ?But he has a good equation not only with the selection committee but also with his team mates. The selection committe knows best.
'Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown',the players who undergo this responsibility know best and for them their reasons are justified enough. We can make our own assumptions on this topic and this debate will continue.
