The Comeback Kids Of The 2008 New Hampshire Primary

The Comeback Kids Of The 2008 New Hampshire Primary

Hillary Clinton and John McCain were being counted as down and out -- Clinton just a few days ago; McCain all summer and fall. Then they up and win the New Hampshire primary -- Clinton by 2% over Barack Obama; McCain by 5% over Mitt Romney. What makes this even more interesting is that polls leading up to election time had Obama as much as 10% ahead of Clinton.

For the Democrats, this means a political dogfight. And if John Edwards wins South Carolina at the end of the month (he won the state primary in 2004; Edwards was born in South Carolina), it could become a three-way dogfight. For political junkies, this is almost too much.

On the Repbublican side of things, former Governor Mitt Romney has outspent his opponents by untold millions, but a grassroots minister defeated him in Iowa and a nearly bankrupt aging Arizona senator beat him in New Hampshire. Although Romney has plenty of his own money to run on, these defeats have to be demoralizing for his campaign and his presidential prospects. However, it breathes new life into the almost-dead McCain campaign machine. And with Huckabee coming in a relatively decent third (11% of the vote), the Republicans are set for a knockdown-dragout as well.

And let us not forget ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who barely campaigned in Iowa and New Hampshire. The Giuliani camp has set its sights on the "big picture," deciding to spend its time in major states like Michigan and Florida. The Republican National Convention could be the one to watch this year, especially with four major players involved (and perhaps a couple more if Ron Paul and Fred Thompson pull a few surprises).

Far better this free-for-all than the three or four candidates the media was predicting at the end of the New Hampshire Primary. Far better that more people get the chance to decide on the parties nominees than have it be decided by two small states at the beginning of the process.

Romney

I think he was expected to do well in NH because he was governor of neighboring Massachusetts and was more well-known in NH than inmost places in the country. Also, Romney apparently outspent McCain by a ton in NH. Sure, Michigan is coming up, but that's just one state, his father's home state. There are a lot of southern states coming up that Romney has little chance of winning. Coming in second doesn't count for much as far as actually winning the nomination -- aren't the primaries winner-take-all? If so, he won't accumulate delegates unless he starts winning. Guiliani has been pouring all his time and money into Florida, etc., so that will make it more difficult for Romney to have a good showing in those states. As for McCain, yes he won NH in 2000, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people who supported him then might be hesitant to vote for someone who would be the oldest president ever on inauguration day.

I'm not sure why people are

I'm not sure why people are claiming that McCain was down and out and made a great comeback in New Hampshire. It's been pretty much a foregone conclusion that he would win in that state and, worst case scenario, he would be a very close second. New Hampshire was the perfect state for McCain to win because of the number of moderate Republicans and the independent voters. Also, how does two second-place finishes in the first two states mean that Romney is in trouble? This statement is counterintuitive at best. He got 32% of the vote in N.H. and 24% in Iowa. He lost to Huckabee in a state with a large Evangelical vote and lost a close one to McCain in a state that McCain won in 2000 against George Bush. He seems to be doing just fine. Huckabee was 21 points behind him in N.H. and McCain was 13 points behind him in Iowa. And now they're going to Michigan where he has strong support there as well. It's way too early to start counting anyone out, especially the only candidate to make two strong showings in the first two states. Second place and he's in trouble? Ridiculous. If that's the case, then Edwards is a lost cause.
