The coming singularity
posted November 29, 2007 - 1:09amTo me at least it seems that we are heading on a path toward what others call a technological singularity. Every year computing costs go down while computing power goes up. More people are using computing technology to handle their daily lives. Everything is becoming automated. Even my cat has an electronic feeder and litter box (yes I spoil my cat). My wife has three laptops at her disposal and it seems we are on the Internet for a great part of the day.
There is a chance that humanity will not destroy itself and technology can continue on it’s seemingly exponential path. I was looking at a new game for the PS3 called Gran Turismo 5 and the cars and driving action seemed very close to real life footage. I was playing Super Metroid on the Wii (a less powerful system compared ot the PS3) and I felt very much involved especially with the unique remote like controller and the user interface of the game. Games, technology, and reality are mixing together blurring the lines of experience.
I for one am looking forward to the singularity. I welcome the radical technization of life and reality. Human 2.0 should run much smoother. Hopefully organic life will utilize silicon and mesh together and eventually replace the organic but with the same intelligence and human grasp of history programmed into it. Of course at the peak time of the actual singularity taking place we cannot say what will happen and our puny minds can’t even comprehend the changes that will take place well after the knee of the curve.
