The Concpt of Satnam (the Word, Naam or Name) in Sikhism-A Philosophical Review of the Mool Mantra-III
posted November 27, 2007 - 8:30amThe earth in theories seems only treasure of sand, rocks, minerals, and things, but most of it is used for the conversion of matter into vital energy. The process of this conversion needs our attention at the law of conservation of energy; we seem to be more interested in the conservation of the energy from one form to another, yet there appear a need that we may also consider the conservation of energy in one form. The conservation of energy in the form of vital energy needs its conservation as we call it preservation of it. Now the preserving of one form of energy, particularly the vital energy, in its life giving form seems to be the prima factor of wise use of human intelligence.
This seems so as not all forms of living things lower in intelligence seem to interfere in the conservation of vital energy, as in that case the free will is not very significant.
It is a one of the great wonder in human history, though with some exemptions, that the research scholars in any field do not seem to be very intelligent academically. The wise or the genius seems to be those who know that intelligence in its right frame of reference, that is, in its original form is selfless by which the human knowledge is used. The quantity and quality of knowledge seems to the factor that contributes towards making a human intelligent or wise. The wise seems to be more concerned more with quality, the unchangeable and self-evolving.
Whereas, the intelligent is bothered more about the quantity of knowledge that can be put into compact form as if, appearing particularly to the wise ones, the endless universe is a micro chip of some billions of MB in the super computer. Thus, the preservation of vital energy is disturbed at the uppermost level, that is, the consumption of it in the process of evolution so that the appearing life may be sustained. The vital energy is not the human property; rather it is the original quality of the universe.
While looking for the matter to convert it from life giving form to non-life giving form, is intellectually seems of highest interest. Yet the genius humans in any field would support only preservation of vital energy by reducing the conversion and increasing its preservation as the preservation seems to be the highest of the catalytic effects to both refine and reform the vital energy.
The refinement increases the effects of quality and quantity present in the life givers thus reforming the quality of life, living and thus the natural process of continuity and evolution of life. As far as the concept of light and consciousness are related, the qualities appear to be different in the form of light being life giver and consciousness being the source that converts the light energy and its many different forms to the vital energy.
We may not make light static but the consciousness can be made dynamically static. It means that the intensity of light though does not change its speed but effects, but in case of it is the richness or level of consciousness the existence and qualities differ. We attribute a word that it glows; this glow is the level of life giving quality that may be regulated by one’s free will. The light travels, but the conscious being present as Omnipresent does not travel that way, it is traveling is spontaneous that the concept of time and distance does not seem applicable.
Even when we talk about addition of souls, the result is still a soul, similar to the concept of adding zeros. In the consciousness, there is absence of thought, activity and action, though it is the source for it, but in the light activity of propagation of its qualities and action of traveling seems to be the most important. Now the consciousness is not simply life giver, rather it is life by itself; all the life givers perform the activity and action of the very quality of life giving present in each one.
Again, the action that occurs in the life givers is the conversion of all forms of energy into vital energy and the activity within it being that it keeps the vital energy and the consciousness in the state of living form. In all of the living forms of life, present the vital energy and consciousness play the major role, such that the life in the visible form appears to be because of these two.
Moreover, the invisibility of the consciousness makes it wider in scope and minute in presence, as this is called omnipresent. The presence of the space is also considered life giver only, as one of five fundamental life givers, namely solid (the matter), water, air, fire and space; but the presence of consciousness in it is known to be the life by itself. That is why it seems that in the scriptures the consciousness is called the universal consciousness, in other words the Spirit. The soul seems to be like activation of the Spirit by the Divine Free Will; the analogy of it seems to be the ejection of electron from the surface of a metal by the activation energy.
It is also like a drop of water leaving the surface of the sea for a moment. This simile as well as the analogy in the case of consciousness seems to be its activation by vital energy giving birth to a new life or living form. Now the consciousness at its highest level is called the Supreme Consciousness or the Spirit that is named as the God, the Giver all that exists. All other life givers seem to be serving him all the times or eternally, He being the One and only One as the Supreme Giver.
By serving means that He is Giver through them, so these are His Means to bestow His Grace and Mercy as the Giver. These and time Even the mountain of salt of Potassium Chloride is a treasure of life if used, the water, air, fire and all similar things are life giving. What can convert matter into life or vital force is so auspicious and beyond any 'value system’, that we seem to be in the state of uneasiness or disease by giving it self-assumed value system that varies with its needs.
. For water to purify itself is very natural, this very need of purification as needed by humans is revealed by water and its importance and utility.
This rich feeling of reverence due to its life giving-ness is considered as worship or Puja, the special attention and care given to life givers. In the Gurbani, the word used for it is doing their Satikar ( Sati means that truly exists Kar means the continuity of the creation, as in the Onkar. You see the word Kar refers to Art of Creation continuing the process of evolution in many forms), thus a feeling of respect for that contributes in the process of continuity and evolution of life.
The word Satikar is one of the most ancient words that are used for the said purpose. The same sages also say the Word of God also purifies the life givers. That is why, it seems, that in the presence of life givers the Name of God is recited, chanted, sung (the Kirtan), and other rituals and ceremonies are performed.
By doing this, it is believed that the benefits that are given by them are of higher level. For example if the Music is put on to be heard by plants, trees, birds, animals etc., the quality and quantity of what these give enhances very much, whether in the form of herbs, fruits, milk or whatever is produced.
If this very thing, as we know it as balance, is disturbed it also does the similar things done by violation of dignity of words; like breaking, distracting and diverting one’s attention and thus concentration. The process of evolution involves life in totality; it also includes all that contributes to continuity of life. The lowest level of consciousness may be assumed that of vegetarian world or plants, but when a human is sick, one feels it.
This is simply life giving qualities that are attributed as gods, as if we say that God and Truth are one. As the rivers emerge back to the sea with their given names, and what remains is the sea by itself with its given name according to its action with cause and effect in re-cyclic process by which the presence of water on the land is possible. The name given to the river is thus temporary as compared to the sea. The sea remains both with its independent existence as well as with that of the water present in different forms on the land.
Similarly, the names given to numerous things, places and persons are temporary; this very thing is called as Satnam in the Gurbani. The word Satnam means that it is eternal though present in the temporary forms, the analogy of which is the sea and its presence on the land. In other words, it is like a proper name and all other names are like given names as that of the rivers, while considering the sea. The above life giving things are like rivers.
Moreover, there are so many rivers with different names in the world, but when these emerge into the sea, and finally we name it the ocean. On the emergence, all of the rivers lose their individuality, and are known by the name of the sea. This new identity is not different from their original identity, as the rivers so emerged were also filled with the water that came from the sea in the form of rain. Even the sea thus gets all names of the rivers, so there is no wonder if the rivers are known by the name of the sea after emerging.
One may say that the seas are many, but when we compare a river and sea is not comparable. We take it that the feature by which seven knows the seas or more names are based on their quality and or type of water, as God is also known by many names according to His one particular Divine Action. If He is everywhere, it is named Omnipresent, if He is sustainer or Cares for all it is named as Gopal, Govind, etc., and many other names relevant to His numerous Divine Actions.
Like water from the sea is given different names when present on the land, and gets the same name after going through the process of re-cycling from sea to sky and then to earth and finally back to the sea. The clouds, rain, river, pond, lake, etc. all seem to be different but still are part of the sea and finally go back to its origin; the sea.
The name of the sea is thus hidden in all of these names; in other words, these indirectly represent the sea. At the word that belongs to God and the other words given to different forms in the Creation, carries the original word, as sea does. In the Gurbani, it said thus:
“Kayi Baar Pasreo Pasar, Sda Sda Ik Ekamomnkar”
It says that the universe has been created many times, but ultimately in the re-cyclic process of Big Bang to Big Crunch, what remains as it is only God by Himself.
The concept of the sea is similar to the re-cyclic processes occurring in the universe. The sea always remains there, though the water on the whole earth evolves and emerges back to the sea. The concept of Satnam is also open for Free Will of God and as well as that of humans. When we consider it at sea level it is Hard Determinism; that is, no change in it is possible except by His Divine Free Will, which ultimately does not change.
As the water cannot be eliminated, but its forms that solid, liquid and gas depends on human’s free will that is at bit lower level it is like Soft Determinism. Change in form needs free will that way, but one is Liberal in the way of using it. It appears that at its original level it is life giver in sense of totality, and in other forms it is life giver, at the choice level of how an individual uses it; is individual’s choice.
Though, life giver, the misuse in the last two types may be harmful if free will is based on self-interest. So water like all other life givers, need attention for its original quality, purity, the way it works, etc., like drinking mineral water does not mean that the water in other forms have lost its life giving power, it simply needs purification. In the Gurbani, it is also said that the life is evolved from the water:
“Pahlan Jio Panni Hai Jitu Hariya Sabh Koi”
First the water was created from which the life evolved, and thus the life on earth was created from water. Whether in Sikhism or other religions, the worship, reading scriptures, meditation and all other similar ceremonies, rituals, etc., are offered and performed in the presence of water.
For example, if first putting does the Paath (reading) of Japu Ji Sahib something filled with water near this water is not called simple water, it is called Jal, the life giver water. It is like magnetizing the water with Word; we may also call it as Divine Electro-magnetization of the water. The word Divine is also universal, simply means the original form of what appears to be original. It is also believed by many religions that if water is not placed while doing any religious activity, it may not produce the effect.
The reason seems that as the life was caused in water, so effects of other life giving activities also find cause and effect in it. Thus, the water of life and Word has a strong spiritual bond as we have discussed it as the ‘Satnam’, the Word. I seek your good wishes, blessings and the prayers. Thanks!
