The "D" and the "R"

The "D" and the "R"

The election season is upon us, and comparisons of candidates abound in the newspaper. Paid political advertisements will soon be repeated endlessly on television, the mud flying from here to there in an attempt to denigrate the opponent. This year we’ve had the addition of “robocalls” from candidates, who somehow believe that if they annoy us enough, we’ll vote for them.
But let’s be honest. Most of us have found a fool-proof way of determining who we will cast our vote for, regardless of the character of the man or woman running for office or how outrageous their stand is on an issue. We simply look for the “D” and the “R” after a candidate’s name to tell us what we think.
We don’t need to waste time researching a stand or voting record that way, and we know immediately which bumper sticker to put on our cars and SUVs. Some voters justify this by saying that they vote for their party rather than the candidate, but men like Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson are currently spinning in their graves over the directions of their beloved parties. If you are one of the “D” and the “R” voters, you won’t know that, though, since knowledge isn’t your strong suit.
“Not me,” you’re saying? Test the premise, then. Try to read political articles without attaching to the party affiliation, and then THINK about the message. Do you agree with “your” candidate, or are you merely blindly following the letter designation? Do you have questions about the candidate’s stand? Are you willing to work to find the answers, not just accept the platitudes and empty slogans repeated endlessly? We don’t have to register as Independents, but it would be nice if we at least thought independently.
Go ahead. Give it a whirl. Our democracy is in trouble, and it’s going to take some intellectual effort to get us back on track.

me sences a trap

so this was a trap then ay. well just for the record, I am a card carrying member of Pat Buchanan's Pitchfork Brigade, neither R nor D but yes definitly more in tune with R. If I had lived in Minnesota Jesse Ventura would have been my man and I also did'nt think Ross Perot was so " Crazy ". Well maybe a little. draft Patrick J Buchanan for President He will put AMERICA first

Amen!!!

LadyPeninhand I hear ya' deb!! HA!!

My point has been proven

I've been reading the comments to my entry. My point has been proven.

Interestingly, I've met both.

I met Al Gore at a meeting and during a VP visit at the Fed Center in Denver. Fed Science thing. I met and played pool (billiards) with Al Yankovic in Sioux Falls, SD. some years ago -- another meeting, but he was playing in the area, and staying at the same hotel as I. I was plugging a few setups on a table when he came down and asked me if I wanted to play a few. I was winding down from the days meetings. I recognized him from local advertising, introduced my self, He was not perfforming that evening. We played for a couple or three hours, late into the night, and into early morning. I think he beat me more games than I won. Eightball. He was a kick. A genuine nice guy. Younger than me. Finally, one of his band members showed up and rescued me. I was getting grogged and begged off, told him to beat on his own guys. We shook hands and I set abed. (Of course,Yank and me, we swore eternal friendship and a blood-oath. One of binding brotherhood. I swore also to vote for him if he ran for Prez. Now look, Al Gore and I did not get into oaths . . . Like Yank and me. But Al did understand we had some serious problems ahead. I liked both men.) I hope we can fix the electoral mess; perhaps with Article V.

Yes I agree, if it is Yankovic

Not the creator of the internet.

Put Weird Al in office any ol' day.

God Bless Kathryn Harris

She was a beacon of light and sanity that stood tall and would not cave in to Liberal slanted courts and media. Despite the accusations and name calling, she has given the country a chance to survive and thrive under the leadership of George Bush. And she did the honest thing as well, staying true to her values. I shudder at the alternative, Weird Al Gore. What he would have done after 9 / 11 after he sought permission from the French and the UN would be a big fat Nada. Saddam would have financed a N. Korean nuke years ago and been in posession of several which i'm sure he would have tossed one to his bud, Bin. You know, nothing large, small suitcase variety. God bless Kathryn Harris, God bless George Bush and our brave troops. And God bless the United States.

I agree with what you say,

I agree with what you say, but I'm not one of these people who vote that way. I'm usually at a loss during any election because most of our politicians can't get their heads out of their own asses. Your last sentence has an error. Our "democracy" is not in trouble.

I liked your D and R

I wanted to make a little money writing. The Bush economy that is thriving is just about the end of me. Probably you too. Hope Florida gets to vote and have the vote count. How is Kathy Harris doing; poorly, from what you've heard. She and the Payoff. She should have dropped out or figured a squirrels way to suck up the coin and vacation for several years. Just curious. les

Letter to the Editor?

Deb, This would make a great letter to the editor - too bad most newspapers only use 'bites'... Having just passed the primaries it might be worth a shot - maybe somewhere like The Village Voice on line... Good Luck! ~Angel
