“Excuse me, please, you see we are sharing the same window in the plane, can we talk?” he asks.
“Yaw, we can,” I say.
“Are you from India?” he asks.
“Yaw, I am an Indian,” I reply.
“I see. Are you NRI,” he asks.
Well, I am not NRI; I am from India, and you,” I ask.
“Well, I am from Canada,” he replies.
“It is nice meeting you,” I say.
“Thanks, I am delighted, it has been a wonderful experience to visit India,” he says.
“Yaw, indeed it is, even the people in India visit various places with the feelings of reverence and enjoy it,” I say.
“Wow, it is wonderful, I have noticed and enjoyed it,”
“Hey, are you just going to visit abroad?” he asks.
“Yaw, I am just going to visit Canada,” I reply.
“Thanks, well, why do you speak sadly?” he asks.
“Well, I am not sad,” I say.
“Come on, just share it, do not be so mean,” he says.
“All right, you know, you are an interesting person, do you have time to listen? You see I have many points, which seem of great concern for me, my personal, social points and life in general,” I say.
“Yaw, tell me, you see New Delhi to Toronto, wow, it is a long way to go, we can discuss a lot, is not it,” he says.
“Well, you see English is not my first language, so I may not be able to convey exactly what I want to,” I say.
“You know, you are telling me as if you are a perfectionist, we can communicate even when we do not understand the language, is not it,” he says.
“Yaw, you are right. Well, you see I belong to a family in which my father is a retired vice-principal of Govt. College for Physical Education, Patiala in Punjab,” I say.
“Wow, please tell me more about him and your family,” he says.
“Well, you see he has been Asian champion and best player, as well as the youngest volleyball player,” I say.
“Wow, it is wonderful,” he says.
“You know he used to be considered as among best ten in the world as at that time it was not a game in Olympic in early sixties. I feel proud of him, you know, he was the decathlon champion of India, interuniversity champion of javelin throw,” I say.
“Gosh, he is a good sportsman, is not it,” he says.
“Yaw, you know he is the only living legend of Indian sports being the champion of 12 games. He is a writer, poet, singer, actor, producer and so many other qualities that he brought us up by sacrificing name, fame and money such that students and colleague call him the “King” of sports. He was the best sportsman at the national school games, while at the high school, is not it a wonderful,” I say.
“Yaw, I feel so. Hey was your grandfather sportsman?” he asks.
“No, he was a good carpenter in a village,” I say.
“Wow, was he rich to make your father a great sportsman?” he asks.
“No, you see my father belonged to a poor family in a village, which was not able to pay even his fee. My grandfather was having five sons and two daughters,” I say.
“Hey, wait a minute, how comes that your father became an international player?” he asks.
“Well, it is an amazing point, you see he reached to an international level in sports by his own efforts as the colleges offered him the scholarships, and other financial helps,” I say.
“I see it means he is a self-made human, but why did not he go to the Olympics.” He asks.
“Well, it was due to lack of funds, he could not prepare for the Olympics,” I say.
“Hey, he could have approached the authorities and the seniors, did not he do it?” he says.
“Yaw, he could have, but you know he is extremely reserved kind of person and thus has never interfered in anybody’s life,” I reply.
“I see. Why he did not go abroad?” he says.
“You see he was having many offers of jobs from abroad, but he did not go, for his children, us to learn to serve the community as a good citizens, is not it a setting an example as a good father?” I say.
“Wow, it is setting a good example, we have such people both in east and west, is not it,” he says.
“Yaw, I am proud of it,” I reply.
We enjoy the richness and joy of diversification of countries and the cultures.
