A Funny Story with a Lesson Well Learned, I Say
My daughter is a normal, healthy 8 year old with an active imagination and selective hearing. She is in third grade and goes to a wonderful school. She has learned, on this great day in history, to pay closer attention to what her teacher is saying.
It all started when she burst through the door of our home, from school and sat down on our sofa with her arms crossed proclaiming that she was never going back to school. “Why”, I asked, as a dutiful mother should. “Because…. they locked us down, closed all the blinds in the classroom and made us hide, cause there was a bad man that could hurt us,” my daughter replied. This sounded terrifying to me, so I pulled out my trusty cell phone and called a parent volunteer who was at the school. “Sierra came home from school, very upset and shaken. Can you tell me what happened there today?” By the time my friend had finished explaining the details I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.
This is what really happened:
There was an (bad) accident in front of the school and some (man) got hurt, (we now know he is doing well). A helicopter had to land on the school grounds, so they kept the kids inside (lockdown) so they wouldn’t run outside and possibly get hurt.
The teacher closed the blinds in the room (trying to keep the kids calm…they love seeing helicopters) and decided to play (hide) the mascot (this is a stuffed toy that the children take turns hiding in the classroom).
I dried my tears of laughter and called my daughter into the den to explain, “what had really happened”. “I guess I should listen better,” was her reply.
"A lesson well learned," I say.
