The Girl's Guide to Becoming a Sports Fan
posted January 24, 2007 - 2:44pmMost of my guy friends love to find girls who are fellow fans of whatever sport they most enjoy. It combines two of their greatest loves: sports and girls.
As a girl, I had no interest whatsoever in football. It was some dumb game that ran into my favorite shows and turned my boys into screaming idiots. Then I met my friend, Geoff. He's one of the Seahawks' biggest fans. He goes to every home game and watches every single away game. His room is decked out with Hawk gear. As we began to spend more and more time together, his enthusiasm for the Seattle Seahawks rubbed off on me. But I didn't grow up with the sport. I didn't have a clue as how to become a fan. What girl wants to memorize stats, rosters, player numbers, blah blah blah? I sure don't have the time to research and memorize all this.
Here's the easy way to learn about your team (and this works for any sport, but I'm using the Seahawks as my example):
1) Watch the game with boys.
I found out which of my boys were Seahawk fans and I made plans to watch games with them. They assumed I didn't know anything about the game so they'd automatically turn and explain the play/penalty/etc. It didn't take long for me to pick up the general rules.
2) Dedication is key.
The only way I could learn about the players and keep up with injuries and stats was to watch as many games as possible. In the 2006-07 season I missed maybe 3 Seahawk games. I watched every other game. I learned, by watching, which players were injured, who had inconsistencies in their game, and I was always picking up on new rules.
3) Listen to the guy talk.
Usually when my boys get together and talk sports, I'd tune them out and either do my own thing or talk with my girls. Once I became a Seahawk fan I realized they were talking about my new favorite team! I got my very own stats sheet and player update just by listening to them. It's way better than having to look them up on my own or *shudder* turn on ESPN.
4) *sigh* Do the research yourself.
Sometimes it's better to stop listening to the guys' prattle and look the info up yourself. All the teams have websites; it's just a matter of finding them. Usually they'll post stats, scores, injury reports, and other cool stuff like that. Oh and it's fun to look at the roster when they have pictures to check for eye candy.
GO HAWKS! They may not have gotten to the Superbowl again this year, but there's always next year!
