The Great and Wonderful I.D. (a.k.a. God)

The Great and Wonderful I.D. (a.k.a. God)

After reading the epic blog battle between evolution and Intelligent Design (the capitals letters are intentional), I noticed that the I.D. fanatics have started getting a little facitious. They constantly keep bringing up how evolution is "only a theory" as though there were something metaphysical about theories. I also keep seeing that there are those that seem to think that evolution defines a continuous process starting at the big bang.

I've determined that those folks are stupid. I used to think that they were just ignorant. They just didn't know. But now I see that THEY DON'T WANT TO KNOW. They want to just keep screaming at the sky demanding proof proof proof.

Well, the proof is out there. They just don't want to see it. I don't see anywhere in any of it that de facto claims that a Supreme Being (Brahma, Zeus, Odin, or the Great Three: Allah, Yahweh, and God who all seem to be the same Intelligent Designer) does not exist.

I prefer to follow the facts. There are chemical reactions. One happens in your nose everytime a protein particle stumbles across a receptor neuron. For some people, some protein particles generate a histamine response. A "theory" might suggest that sometime in our (as in humanity's) past running across a critter that generated such protein particles might not be in our (again, all of humanity's) progenerative interests to hang out where those critters hung out. By avoiding those areas, and consequently those critters, our ancestors were able to survive, and procreate, that much better.

Those of you unable to grasp this concept may continue to praise the Great I.D. for your willing ignorance.

As for how an allergy to cats stems directly from the big bang, that's a much bigger concept. Those that suscribe to that line of thought believe that chemical reactions are all that there are. Me writing an argument here on this website can, with the right parameters defined, be predicted just as can be the reaction between hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

For most scientists, this is a little hard to accept. Too many variables to even begin a proper experiment. So let the future investigate that one.

For now, I find the the concept of believing that all existence stems from a single (or pantheon, what's the difference?) I.D. preposterous. All there is to suggest such a Thing might exist is a feeling. Some people feel small, so there must be something bigger. Some people feel powerless, so there must be something powerful. Some people feel ignorant, so there must be something that knows. Some people feel they aren't as good as they could be, so there must be something out there that is all-good.

Does this mean there is no I.D.? @#$%!@#% and all the cartoon curses I can think of NO! That we can think of it at all means we have produced one whopper of a hypothesis. It's one that can only be studied through a form of experimentation that even Albert Einstein favored above all others. Thought experimentation.

Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Descarte, Bacon, St. Aquinas, Hobbes, Hegel, Kierkeguaard, Nietzsche, Calvin... all were philosophers first and teachers, politicians, moral advisors, church leaders and scientists second. This is why the highest form of education awarded is that of "Doctor of Philosophy".

Any and all thought given to evolution as a concept, a theory, a truth, an evil... is a mark of its authenticity.

All I can really say to affirm my predilictions to evolution over religious creationsim is that no wars have been fought, no holocausts committed, no conquests begun, no cultures murdered in the name of science. Hate begins as a statement defining the differences in "us" and "them". In science, we can all be individuals and a part of the entire human race at the same time.

I refuse to worship anyone or Anything for nothing deserves such devotion of me. That I exist is a simple enough fact. That some imagninary friend in the sky decided I was special enough to do so would only be a statement of my own self worth.

Those who believe only in absolutes are pathetically shallow and narrow minded. They are incapable comprehending anything but that which is pushed upon them by over bearing greedy individuals that carry only their own political agendas.

And now I have fired my own salvo.

As I say

It was just something to consider. I realize I wrote it kind of fast and some of my irony did not come through. And you are correct -- Unlike you, I have nothing original to say. But no, despite what you may think, I have no dreams of "converting" you. I only wish you long life and happiness. I think we can literally choose to believe whatever we want to believe, whether that takes us into what you call reality or metaphysics. We're not required to latch on to one or another, we are free. I can choose to make metaphysics my reality. I think it is an important choice, and one should consider which one they can live with for the rest of their lives, which one is going to give them the least anguish, or perhaps the most harmony with their "fellow apes" as you might say. Good rappin' with ya. www.joesnare.com

Re: Consider this

I missed your comment when you originally posted it. "as though there were something metaphysical about feelings." you wrote. Yes. All feelings are, by definition, metaphysical. Please learn something about the topic you are writing. And yes, feelings are real. They sure feel real. Yes, I do want to live. I do kind of enjoy it. "Have you ever done something unselfish, and felt good about it?" No. Why? Being unselfish while helping others is the right thing to do. I feel good only because I'm enjoying myself. What is the difference between helping others and enjoying myself and hurting others and enjoying myself? Both have the same selfish outcome. Joy. Just as worshiping God does. If your point is that helping others is a selfish pursuit... ok. It does enhance the survival chances of the species... You also make the typical leaps of logic and general assumptions about others based on your own feelings about yourself. "When you are old, you will desperately want someone around to make you feel wanted. You won't want to feel like nobody cares whether you live or die." Wow. While I'm not old right now, I don't care whether I live or die. It's all in how I live the life I have. There are no absolutes, as you seem to think. I take great joy in knowing this. As for that extra day... Maybe I'll father just one more knuckle dragging ape creature who'll figure out to take the human species, and all the necessary supporting critters, to the stars. By the way... just as you will never in a million lifetimes be swayed to think other than you do about your religion, or your faith, neither would I believe other than I do. You cannot convince me with your total and utter lack of evidence. It is all, in a word, metaphysical. What all this discussion boils down to is whether religious creationsim should be taught as an alternative to evolutioary science in public schools. The answer is NO. Evolution is a theory. Yes, just a theory, but science none-the-less. Creationsim, intelligent design, Whatever... is relgion, or at best, philosophy. It should be taught, yes, along side with other such beliefs and philosophies followed by other peoples and cultures of the world. One cannot have too much knowledge.

Fridays --- Sundays

I'm sure that God will allow a week of Fridays as surely as He has allowed for a month of Sundays. Now to Whom do I give my extra $$$$? Falwell? Robertson? Joel Osteen? John Wesley? There are too many millionaire preachers to count.

I love Fridays. I will pray

I love Fridays. I will pray to any god out there if they will promise me more Fridays during the week. Now, scientifically, I'm not sure if a week of Fridays is possible. However, I will cheer on every Friday that I live to see. Hooray for Friday!

What a sad cold world!

I think its so sad to live a lifetime based only on scientific mumbo jumbo and the determination to have a "human reason" why? why? why? for everything that we have no written-in-black-and-white answers for. For me, even though life is not perfect, I feel comfort in knowing that what I dont accomplish or fullfill in this lietime, I will in the next. I know its human instinct to have an answer for every thing that crosses our paths, from the color of our "sh*t" to "what came first, the chicken or the egg"! Personally...who gives a hoot! What matters is making our existance worthwhile, whether it be passing on a friendly smile or saying a silent prayer for someone less fortunate. Lets get back to basics and start living life together, stop knit picking at non-important issues and do some good in the world. Its Friday...now thats something to cheer about!

Consider this

"All there is to suggest such a Thing might exist is a feeling," you say, as though there were something metaphysical about feelings. Maybe feelings are real, brother. You want to live, don't you? Maybe that's the big reality. Have you ever done something unselfish, and felt good about it? There's another reality. When you are old, you will desperately want someone around to make you feel wanted. You won't want to feel like nobody cares whether you live or die. What difference does it make to the chemistry of the species if you live to be eighty, or eighty plus one day? It doesn't make a bit of difference -- only that you feel it. Just something to consider. And I hope you get that extra day. www.joesnare.com

Ha!

It's nice to see you are keeping a sense of humor in this type of discussion. And Einstein is not, like, my God. THE top scientists are coming around? Wow. You must not be reading the same journals I am. My response to your earlier comment was intentionally juvenile because, well, I felt it was appropriate. That and you've only strengthened my argument. At no point have I ever suggested that a person believing in a religion was delusional. At what point in my essay did I appear so? Did I make baseless assumptions? Any conclusions leaped to? Or have I been moving a little too fast...

well my brother can beat up your brother

I've read it.

And responded to it. And this is my response to your return salvo... THHPPPPPPPPPPPPT! No, you're stupid!!!!!!! Nyeah. I'm totally mooning your comment right now.

Fargo, I invite you to

read my xombyte on " this very lucky species of ours " which questions the phenominal odds it took for us as a species to get where we are today. It is a lighthearted post yet still begs to ask, Why us? Why are we so lucky? If you would read it , that is if i'm not to much of an imbecile for you and just explain how it is things are just so, JUST SO. Did'nt even Einstein say as much ? And he must be like your God, right ? Even the top scientists today are coming around and saying it could only be God. By the way, I never cared for that politicly correct label of I D. It reeks of me having to say Happy Holiday to you now instead of Merry Christmas. Your post is well written and I scored it a 5 because your content is delusional....To me. So the 5 is quite fair. It seems your a college graduate to write so well, maybe your not but it reminds me of the last scene in Godfather Part 2. It is a flashback scene as Michael is thinking back to when both his brothers were still alive and the family was still very happy. Sonny, upon hearing that Mike joined the marines in favor of staying in the family business was enraged. He grabs Mike by the collar and screams " What are you stupid. You go to college to get stupid " Fargo, if you too went to college bro, I say " What are you stupid. You go to college to get stupid ". Seems now I've fired off a salvo of my own. Lock and load baby. Lock and load.
