The Homeless Man and The Republic

The Homeless Man and The Republic

Today in McDonalds I saw a man buying a homeless man a meal. I could not believe my eyes. It made my heart soar. And than it made me look at the inside of my own heart. Here is why.

Some of you have read my articles here and I am a sensitive sort. I can come off tough but overall I want to help. And by nature I care about the feelings of others sometimes before I consider myself.

I do not hold a candle to the man I saw today. He walked the homeless man up to the counter and told him to order what he wanted. He told the homeless man that he likes hamburgers and they are good. Especially as a meal, get the meal with some fries. He honestly wanted to feed the man. The generosity of this man is not the best part. It keeps going.

The compassion in this man's heart was so great it brought out the humility in the homeless man. The homeless man was obviously trying to order the cheapest burgers on the menu. Out of respect for the man buying his meal. I couldn't believe it. There is more.

The people in the McDonalds started saying how much they like hamburgers and the fish sandwiches were good too. Than the manager jumped in and said how the fries are the best when very fresh and that she had just put a brand new batch in just for him (the homeless man) so get the meal.

It brought tears to my eyes that I had to hide. I even have to fight them back again while writing this. I am no whimp. I am six three, go about 230 pounds and I will fight for what is right. That to me is an honest discussion. But this, it made my heart soar. I am proud of America.

I have been talking and studying a little about the intent of our founding fathers wanting our great new Nation to be a Republic. Not a democracy. They were afraid of the new Nation they were risking their lives to start of becoming a democracy. They wanted America to be a Republic.

In a Republic. A hundred men can be in a room and all but one can agree. The one man who disagrees will be represented too. That is a true Republic. It is what America was built on.

This homeless man was the one man in the room.

It took a middle class man, a gay female McDonald manager and a homeless man to teach me a lesson I will never forget. America is a true REPUBLIC.

They then sat down together and proceeded to eat their meals.

I put my head down and told God thank you in the privacy of my own soul.
