The Horrors and The Horrors

The Horrors and The Horrors

How confusing is this! There are two bands called The Horrors. One is from America and plays awesome rockabilly mangled songs and the other is a UK rockabilly freak show.

The first band called The Horrors are Paul Cary – vocals & guitar, Andrew Joseph Caffrey – guitar and Jamie Mclees – drums from Ceder Rapids, Iowa. They are no longer playing together. Their EP Vent is Indie Gold!!!! When I found it, i fell in love with each twisted and demented turn. My favorite being "Briar Patch" followed closely by "Dragger's Rant." The album is a salute to dirty America in an "American Graffiti" goes goth sort of way.

The second band called The Horrors claim to have the same influences with deep roots set in mid-century blues, traditional rock and roll, and obscure 60s garage rock. They are Faris Badwan - vocals, Tomethy Furse - bass, Joshua Von grimm - guitar, Coffin Joe - drums, and Spider Webb - keys. Yet their sound is much more thrown together and spontaneous. They throw a punk punch while the other hits a switch blade. With songs like "Sheena is a Parasite" and "Count in Fives" they are quickly becoming scenester album Gold.

The American Horrors came first and I feel, did it best. Their theme was simple: 1950s Horror movies metamorphisized into songs that make you want to throw on a pair of 3D glasses while kicking and spitting.

The British Horrors came second and their sound isn't together yet. I am judging rather harshly. Afterall, American Horrors have been around for years and the British Horrors don't even have an album out yet.

The American Horrors had a unique look. Most of their press photos were them wearing red swirling hypnotizing sun glasses or 3D cardboard frames. It called too a better more simpler time.

The British Horrors are known for their looks. In fact, their image is their thing. Guitarist Joshua Von Grimm has been featured on the cover of Italian Vogue and the band are awefully pretty in a turn-of-the-century-dandy sort of way. Hell, they don't even have an album out and they have a shoe deal with Vandini! Their trade mark is their hair. Joshua's foot tall triumph over gravity and hairspray has gotten them a lot of attention...mostly from girls. hell, I'll admit it, I like it. Their music comes second to the package.

The American Horrors are part of a small undercurrent of rockabilly revivalists, a movement that always appears to be on its last leg.

The British Horrors are ushering in the Nu Goth movement that is grabbing hold in London and looking to replace the Emo fad over the next year or two.

So who wins? Well, in Wikiality, the British Horrors win. Why? Because thy got to Wikipedia first! Look "The Horrors" up and you'll find a ridiculously lengthy definition of the British band with nothing of the American band mentioned. They also hold the top Google search spots with their official site and their myspace. So as far as the cyberworld is concerned British Horrors have one their title. As for me, I like both. Musically I prefer the American Horrors. I mean, how can you beat lyrics like "My mother acted like an angel/ my father act like a demon/ in 1977 I came out screamin"??? Very ballsy. But I like them being the lesser known Horrors. that way I can have them all to myself. then again, let's face it, I am a woman and the other Horrors are damn hot.

The current Horrors (UK) have been largely successful due to making the cover of NME (New Musical Express) before even releasing an EP. It was unprecedented for NME to have no-name bands on the cover. Since then they have established a fanzine and a cult following. They are on tour with NME's Shockwave Indie Rock Tour for the next two months. Their first album Strange House is due out the first week of March and they have just shot the video for their next single "Gloves."

Yeah

The power of Xomba in the Google search rankings. Yeah, I haven't heard from Sue in quite some time. A shame she was good writer.

The Horrors

So Sue's article is getting feedback from an actual band member more than a year and a half later... cool. Wonder what Sue is up to these days... an up-and-coming music journalist, or moved on to something more ordinary? I'd be curious to know.

Nice

Right on a pleasure to have you comment on Xomba. I remember when Sue posted this article her and I had a long discussion about you guys and the Horrors in the UK. I wish I could have seen you guys live, glad you recorded some Cds though. Do you have a current band? If so feel free to plug them on Xomba.

So I am in the US Horrors.

So I am in the US Horrors. A bit strange seeing this article. I was a little surprised that there was a controversy. My only input on this one is that the words were actually My mother sang like and angel My daddy howled like a demon In 1977 I came out all screamin I didn't write it so I can say I was pretty impressed with that one too. Thanks for noticing to the previous posters.

Hair of Horrors

That hair reminds me of Falco's coiff in the Rock Me Amadeus video. I'm not sure how I feel about skinny jeans on men though.

I love the Horrors (US)

One of my favorite albums is the Vent LP by the Horrors (US). I recently discovered the UK Horrors and am quite impressed. However, let me speak of the Horrors (US). Sue classified them as rockabilly. Now I am a pretty big fan of rockabilly and (some)psychobilly music. Having lived in the south for the last 7 years the country rock n roll has grown on me. The Horrors aren't quite rockabilly, but more rock-n-roll. Their sound isn't Gene Vincent, but rather Chuck Berry. Dirty and raw like a runny nose after a 7 day cold. Now I am not about to debate if Chuck Berry is rockabilly, but there is definantely a big difference between rock-a-billy legend Wanda Jackson and Berry or the Horrors for that matter. Either way the Horrors bring a sound rarely heard since the 50's. The song Briar Patch can be compared to Berry's Maybeline on speed with Berry screaming the lyrics. It's rock-n-roll. The same can be said when compared to Billy Riley And His Little Green Men's song Red Hot. The Horrors bridge the gap between a traditional indie sound and 50's rock-n-roll/rockabilly. There is a local band here in Jacksonville that also has a more traditional rock-n-roll sound. You can check them out here http://www.myspace.com/dangtunes They have a ways to go, but I think they're on the right track and not to mention acquiring a pretty decent following. If you hate this music then I suggest you look at this band. http://www.myspace.com/killerrobots The Killer Robots are tomorrows Gwar. I'm working on bringing them to Jacksonville . The Killer Robots don't play shows... they put on a unique twisted circus. I'll be reviewing/interviewing them in a month or so. I loved this Xombyte by the way. Was this a present to me?

This indie-rock town ain't big enough for the both of them

Somebody's got to give in, I think... like bands before them that had to change their names to avoid confusion, such as the English Beat, Squeeze (which had previously been called UK Squeeze), and, more recently, The Bees (U.S.). The UK guys look like they spent a lot of time getting their bird's-nest hair do's just right--a cross between Don King and Edward Scissorhands! Thanks for the article, I'll have to watch for these guys. Both sets of them.
