Prologue
The Sapphire tree was dismayed that a Gem had made a cocoon on her. It was something that had never been done before. She knew that this cocoon would take some of her life force. It would weaken her and put the forest she loved out of balance. If she could not give all of herself to the forest, it would die. This determined little Gem, spun her hair and planted herself there. Now the Sapphire tree had to put things into balance. But how would she accomplish this?
As the cocoon grew and changed she could feel the life in her weaken ever so slightly. The Sapphire tree knew the forest would grow no more. The small amount of life this cocoon had taken was enough to affect her so that new life was harder to begin in the forest. She knew that she alone had the power to create a new life that would put things into balance. It would take some time to complete this mission, but she had to. After the Gem emerged an Olanas, she set to work on putting things back in balance.
After years of giving her song to the forest, she gave some to a special task, a special dream. A small seed in the ground had her attention and for years she sang a special song, just for this seed. It began to grow, and little by little it began to take shape in the ground.
Her dream of balance, now after years of growing was a beautiful silver egg with an inner red glow. The sapphire tree was the forest and she knew that an elf would come by, see something silver and pick it up. She also knew that the elf would know where to take it; to the Olanas.
The silver eggs lay nestled in a single group inside the small cove of a tree trunk.
To the right was an opening to a small dwelling where the oldest Olanas lived. Sappea watched with anticipation as she did every year. She checked every so often for cracks in the eggs from the opening in her dwelling. She liked to watch the new life emerge from the darkness of the shell. Watching over the eggs made her feel like she did when she emerged from her transformation. She knew they would see everything new and colorful, just like she had. When she emerged, she could feel the energy of life pulsing in her. She knew these new lives would too. Sappea was concerned about one egg in particular. It seemed to glow with an inner light that none of the other eggs before had. She wondered what was inside. This egg sent a chill of fear into her. Was it a good thing this egg was glowing?
Sappea waited delightfully as the first eggs began to crack. The little glowing egg wasn’t cracking and she wondered if the life inside would emerge at all. She began to remember her cocoon and how she carefully chose the sapphire tree in the heart of the forest as her tree. Despite warnings to never put her cocoon there, she couldn’t help herself; it had such beautiful branches and flowers. She carefully began to spin her hair around and around to make the black cocoon she would transform in. Inside she could feel life energy and hear the song of life.
Sappea was brought back to the present time by a cracking noise. She looked down and saw the Gems begin to break free of their small silver prisons, all but the glowing one. It just glowed a reddish color and there was no crack that she could see. The other Gems began to stretch out their arms in a newfound freedom. Then fuzzy heads began to peek out and little eyes adjusted to the light. Sappea was the first one they saw and she gently picked them up. Soon all the Gems were free, all but one. Sappea carefully and quickly took them to a small room inside her dwelling where they’d be warm and could easily adjust to the light. As she put them on soft moss a loud humming began to ring in the cove.
Sappea stepped to the opening of her dwelling and threw her hands up over her eyes. The silver egg with the inside glow began to shine with a light as bright as the sun. The light was so intense she could smell charred moss. The light got brighter and then slowly began to fade. Sappea began to lower her hands and there in the cove was a Gem. The glowing silver egg had hatched. Standing there in the cove was a Gem with red hair.
Sappea was shocked and overwhelmed. Never had there been a glowing egg, nor had there been a Gem with red hair. She stepped forward to take the Gem in her hand. This Gem: this curious little creature, walked past Sappea’s outstretched hand into her dwelling toward the other new Gems. She walked up to the cluster and stood there. An uneasy feeling of fear swept over Sappea. This new red haired Gem turned and looked at Sappea, and with her new raspy voice said “My name is Twnel.”
