The Killers - Sam's Town Review

The Killers sophomore effort, Sam's Town, is a solid offering that will add to their commercial and rock appeal. Although their relentless touring in the past year had some band members and record execs thinking they would take some time off, the band chose to tackle their sophomore effort in earnest almost immediately.

Overall the record is enjoyable though somewhat repetitious. Lead singer, Brandon Flowers does not have the best voice but it more than suits the melody and requirements of the music. Also, there is an honest emotional quality to it that evokes images of memories past as if he were reflecting back on the very moment that influenced the song and singing it directly to you.

The foursome are definitely complimentary to each other instrumentally as well. Though none is to "showy", there are plenty of catchy hooks that will do well on radio and TV by making you remember them after even hearing it just once. Of particular interest is the Springsteen-esque "When we were young", which seems to be a looking back motif on how things have changed for the boys in the last two years.

Though not the most original record to come about in the recent past, Sam's Town is still a consistent sophomore effort and will please their ever widening fan base.

Love The Killers

Thanks for the input. I've heard varying opinions on this album but I think I'm just going to buy it as I really loved "Hot Fuss" and I haven't heard anything necessarily bad about this one. Plus I heard pieces of it in a store the other day and it sounded great (although mixed kind of loudly...) When Rolling Stone reviewed the album, they compared the entire effort to Springsteen's "Born To Run" so it's interesting that you pointed that out. Also, the emotional quality you speak of can likely be attributed to the fact that the album is an homage to the band's hometown, Las Vegas. So what you say stands to reason. Great comments! Thank you! Cara
