The Legal System Has Become a Global Laughing Stock
posted August 29, 2006 - 2:09pmThe Legal System is a Joke
By now we must be the laughing stock of the world. Now that the latest spectacle in the sad Jon Benet Ramsey case has run its course we have to step back and look at the entire episode and examine what
it means.
Here we have an obviously deranged man who manipulated our system to his best advantage. He became the center of attention (which he loved), he flew back home in luxury class accommodations (which he loved), got out of a Thai prison in exchange for an American one (a very fair exchange and now it looks as if he won’t be in any prison), and now that he has been exonerated for the hideous crime he confessed to, he holds a very bright future.
Once he has paid his debt for the child pornography charges (which will be a short stay in jail plus a fine no doubt), he will re-enter society and we can expect him to haunt us far into the future. Yes, I predict (and it doesn’t take much to see this coming) that he will the darling of the talk shows, he will do public speaking, he will write a book, he will receive a movie deal, and no doubt become a repeat sex offender and all of this will come at our expense. I also predict that he will become a poster boy for the “Legalize Pedophilia Movement” So what next?
How did this all happen? Much of the blame falls upon the authorities in the Colorado jurisdiction which has bungled this investigation from the start. This was an example of how anxious they are to just find a sacrificial lamb and make their embarrassment go away ASAP. I and others are asking why didn’t they see through his play and leave him in the Thai jail where he belongs? Their excuses are numerous and all are comical. One is that they couldn’t obtain the proper DNA sample in Thailand to test against the DNA found at the scene of the crime. To this I say, “You’ve got to be kidding!!”
Then they said that they extradited him to make Thailand safer for children by removing him from his possible prey. To this I again say, “You’ve got to be kidding!!”
We have before us all the evidence in the world that our legal system has deteriorated into one of tabloid buffoonery and complete bedlam. This gives rise to several questions and points I want to propose.
1. Does all this mean that if not for the advent of DNA forensics would this lunatic have been convicted and sent to the death penalty? And for no better reason than a crazy man had a pathological need to drag all of society into his little dream world and because a humiliated district attorney needed to convict someone, anyone, just to make the case go away? I agree that it might be a good idea to remove this nut from the gene pool but do we really want this kind of justice system? If so, then it closely resembles that of the medieval court system wherein all sorts of bizarre evidence and testimony convicted people.
2. Why have we allowed our precious, and much emulated by other cultures I might add, judicial system, to become the sad, dysfunctional, and media circus that it currently is and how do we repair it?
3. By allowing such a laughable, embarrassing, and bedlam-dominated, court system which will (and is) incrementally causing the fiber of civilization to unravel in exponential proportions, aren’t we inviting the arrival and advent of a super-reactionary to move in and impose draconian methods to restore order? I submit that unless this is reconciled and but fast, I predict that only a super-reactionary could restore order at that juncture.
Once again I find myself hoping Scotty could be me out of here before doom arrives.
