The Link Between Impulsive Buying and Parkinsons Disease
posted October 25, 2007 - 6:27pmPeople who are treated for Parkinson's Disease have been known to develop impulsive behaviors. Are you an impulsive buyer who spends tons of money on items you rarely use? Is there a link between your behavior and Parkinson's Disease?
A procedure called deep brain stimulation, which is used in controlling the symptoms of Parkinsonism, involves placing electrodes into a small region called the subthalamic nucleus, an area important for controlling movement. But it also is where scientists believe the brain yells: "Stop, weigh your options!"; according to neuroscientist Michael Frank.
If this area of the brain is hindered then the ability to accurately assess the risks of behavior is also hindered. This may lead to impulsiveness which can cause people to "shop till they drop".
Even more significant is that the stimulation of this portion of the brain may cause people to over indulge in sex, gambling, or eating.
My Take: If you are impulsive and cannot control your desires, look for a neurosurgeon who will remove your brain and place it in a jar. Who knows; you might end up in a movie!
